How Do You Know You Are Growing Spiritually?

Hetepu (Peace & Blessings) Family.

I was recently asked this question by an individual on the Kemetic religious path.
How do you know if a diet work? Usually, you know if the diet is working after a couple of weeks to a month if you see your waistline shrink or a few pounds off have fallen off the scale. How do you know if you are building muscle that an exercise works? Obvious, you look at yourself in the mirror and you measure your biceps or whatever muscle group you are targeting. But, how do you know if you are growing spiritually? This question has often confused a lot of people mainly because in our era of “wokeness” the term spirituality is often tied with religion, although the two are different. At the same time, enlightenment is also used interchangeably with the word spiritual but these two terms are different as well. For instance, an individual can be enlightened but not spiritual, while a person can be religious and spiritual at the same time. So, how do you know if you are growing spiritually? Well before we dive into this subject, let’s define some terms so that we are all on the same page.

First thing first, we are composed of three parts known as the conscious, Superconscious and subconscious. For simplicity purposes, the conscious is the part of our mind that we use to make choices and decisions. The Superconscious is the part of our mind known as the Divine Spark because it is omnipotent, omniscient and it connects us to the Universe. The subconscious is known as our personal consciousness because it is responsible for helping us to physically survive by storing everything that we have learned in our memory and governing our emotions.

For this reason, the conscious is also called the Spiritual Heart or our Soul. The Superconscious is also called the Higher Self and is personified as Osar (Asar, Ausar, Osiirs), while the subconscious is called the lower self or ego and is personified as Set.

Typically the way our life operates is that when we want something like a glass of water. We make a conscious choice or decision to get what we want, and our subconscious supports our decision by stimulating our body to get a glass of water. Then, our Superconscious manifests whatever we want (e.g. a glass of water) into a reality by providing us with the resources to get the glass of water. This is how we acquired everything pleasant our life.

But, what happens when we want something that appears out of reach like a job promotion, a better job, a home, etc.? Usually it is because our subconscious holds erroneous beliefs in our memory that prevents us from achieving what we want. For instance, if you want a better job, it is the ego within our subconscious that tells us that we do not have the qualifications or that we are not the best candidate. If we want a loving relationship, it is our ego that will tell us that all men/women cheat, are no good, etc. It is our ego that tells us that we are fat, ugly, not worthy to be loved, etc. It is our ego that tells us that “money does not grow on trees” and every other self-defeating belief we have about money and economic freedom.

Basically, every negative and sabotaging saying and belief that is whispered in our ear will come from our ego and where does the ego get these beliefs and ideas from? These are all beliefs and ideas that were either told to us or we picked up from our loved ones, friends, teachers, media, etc. and are now stored in our subconscious. Why did our subconscious pick up these ill beliefs and ideas? It is because the subconscious is like a child, which imitates and mimics everything that it is exposed to and categorizes it as good or bad based upon how the experience makes us feel.

Have you ever wondered why most people who struggle with an addiction, such as cigarettes will tell you how they know that smoking is bad for them, but they will continue to do it because the way cigarettes make them feel? It is because the knowledge about cigarettes appeals to the rational conscious mind, but the motivation and power to smoke are governed by the subconscious.

This is the reason the subconscious was symbolized as a jackass (donkey) because it is ruthlessly stubborn and emotional. This is the reason the subconscious or ego is personified as Set.

Set the personification of the ego

So, how do you change an old belief or idea that is stored in your subconscious? Well, if the belief or idea is fairly new, then it can be changed simply with reeducation. For instance, if you learned that 2+3=4, then being taught the proper way to add will easily correct this belief or idea so that you know the answer is 5.

But for old beliefs or ideas that have been impressed upon your subconscious with emotional triggers, it takes a little more finesse to change them. Typically, emotional beliefs and ideas can only be removed and replaced with a stronger emotional belief and idea. For instance, if you were a child who was bitten by a dog, then this traumatic event convince you that all dogs are ferocious and bad. But, if somehow you have a positive experience, such as a dog coming to your defense against an attacker, then this experience will topple the previous negative dog experience.

Now, you may not struggle with dogs but you might struggle with overeating, exercising, being too nice, being too aggressive, not making enough money, being selfish, etc., which are all character flaws created by your ego or Set. Therefore, the purpose of spirituality is to overcome the ego or Set by merging with the Higher Self or Osar.

Osar (Asar, Ausar, Osiris)

Therefore:

  • Spirituality is not calling yourself “Spiritual,” striving to be nice, striving to be good or declaring yourself better than others. Spirituality is personal psychological development aimed at overcoming all the conditional learnings of the ego that we learned from our family, friends, schools, churches, etc. – particularly egotism, selfishness, fear, anxiety, worry, and other character flaws.
  • Spiritual awakening means becoming aware of your ego’s or Set’s influence in your life.
  • Enlightenment, which has been misinterpreted as gaining information and learning about various subjects, really refers to expanding your consciousness from your ego-self to your Higher Self. Do you know that the reason most people became so health-conscious was that in the 1960s after the government created LSD? People tripped on LSD, mushrooms, ayahuasca, and other psychedelic drugs, which influenced these people to see that animals and plants were living beings too. This was enlightenment because their consciousness expanded and they no longer saw themselves as individuals but as parts of a larger whole. So for the record, reading and studying books on metaphysics, spirituality, history, etc. is not being spiritually awakened nor is it enlightenment. While this activity is a useful guide (especially for those of us who have no spiritual guide), it only strengthens, boost and inflates the ego which can be seen by “woke” YouTubers who argue how “spiritual” or “woke” they are based upon what they have read.
  • Religion, while etymologically defined as a system designed “to tie” one back to the Creator or Source, is a set of ritual and ceremonial practices performed for a lengthy period that they have now become a long-lasting routine. Anytime someone says that you must do something a certain way or else, they are following a religious practice. Since religious practices are basically rituals and ceremonies designed to make a strong impression on the subconscious they can assist in helping one to transcend their ego if it is combined with spiritual awakening and enlightenment. If spiritual awakening and enlightenment are absent from religious practice, then religion becomes a “spiritual trap” where individuals fight over dogmatic beliefs and think that they are “good” or “the Chosen Ones” and everyone else is evil.

How Do You Know You Are Growing Spiritually?

Usually, the most important sign that you are growing spiritually is that you will have a change in behavior. You may become more empathetic, patient, sharing, etc. Typically, whatever you are comfortable doing, you will find yourself in uncomfortable situations. For instance, it never fails that meek and mild manner people always are put in situations where they must be bold and aggressive. They will either get in relationships, have children, or put in job positions where they must be bold and aggressive and vice versa.

Another sign is that you take responsibility for your actions and behaviors because the more the flaw is brought to your attention. The more effort you can devote to changing or eradicating it from your subconscious.

You watch your thoughts, actions, behaviors, etc. because you know that if you dwell on them for a length of time. Your Superconscious will make it a physical reality.

Last but not least, you cease seeing things as good and bad and instead see every experience as an opportunity to spiritually develop and grow and become more Osarian (Asarian, Ausarian, Osirian).

For those on the Kemetic religious path, hopefully, this helps. However, note that if you are on the Kemetic shamanic path, then enlightenment is a side effect that occurs after focusing on tangible goals.
