Acknowledging the Shamanic Calling and Ignoring the Illusionary Dream

Recently I received an email from an individual that wanted to know more about the Calling. In this email the individual had expressed that they believed that they were called to be a shaman but they were not sure. They told me that they were confused about the whole issue, but further inquiry into their reasoning for wanting to know more about the Calling.  Was that they were trying to use the situation to justify engaging in some illegal and harmful practices.  When I told this individual that just because some shamans engage in certain practices out of tradition doesn’t mean that we all have to. This individual had already made up their mind, and I got the impression that they already had certain paraphernalia in their possession. When I tried to contact the individual and tell them that they needed to contemplate their decision and really speak with their ancestors. This individual could no longer be reached or at least they wouldn’t respond to my emails.

I had seen this before but not to this extent that is people misusing spiritual traditions to justify their lower self-ambitions. The first time I witnessed this was when I met a young man who wanted to be a Rastafarian, only later to discover that the reason Rastafarianism appeared to him was because he wanted to smoke weed (marijuana).

REAL SPIRITS

I am not angry or upset with this individual because I understand with all the New Age material that has been published lately about shamanism. It is very easy to believe that anytime you feel a strong urge to do something, to mistake it as your calling, but I want people to be warned because in the West.  People have a bad habit of taking parts of other people’s cultures and traditions to suit their egotistic purposes. Don’t do this with shamanism. Don’t mess with the ancestors and other spirits like that. I don’t care how cliche’ or superstitious it may sound. When you offend REAL SPIRITS they will have you walking around thinking you are all that, not realizing that you are a making a serious fool of yourself.

REAL SPIRITS will back and support you when they want you to do something. Why? I don’t know. In fact I stopped trying to figure out why and how things work on the other side in KAMTA anyway.  The reason I stopped trying to figure out why is because I noticed that every time I did, I got more and more confused. In fact, every time I pressed the issue. I got more and more confused. It comes to now that the reason this was happening is because I was not dead, so I functioned with a different vibe then them. So let me be clear.

Shamanism is a Beautiful yet Dangerous Fire

Shamanism is great! I love everything about it.  It is the only tradition that I have found that is both mystical and practical.   Besides that, shamanism is one of the few traditions that anyone can practice and you don’t have to be initiated in order to practice it. In fact you don’t have to follow any particular path or system or mimic what other people do. All you have to do is listen to your ancestral spirits. This is what I tried to explain to the individual that contacted me trying to get my approval. But, here is where the danger lies, in its simplicity. Because no one comes out and physically tells an individual that they can or cannot call them self a shaman, People are going out in the world claiming to be a shaman and they haven’t been authorized by their ancestral spirits to do so.  Simply put these individuals have not been baptized by the spirits. If you are wondering if you have been authorized by the spirits to be a shaman. You most likely have not because you would know and no one has to tell you. This doesn’t mean that you can’t practice shamanism such as honoring your ancestors and the various guardian spirits in your life, because you can. Shamanism from this perspective and for you is simply meant to be a family practice.  It just means at this level you are not authorized to help other people at the present. For instance, in Cuba, just about everyone knows a little something about the spirits. Many of the people will share with you what worked for them because the Afro-Cuban spiritual traditions are passed around like folk traditions. But, when real problems occur, they will tell you to go see a babalawo, the high priest or some other spiritual authority.  These are individuals that have gone through some training or have at least had some experience dealing with spiritual matters.

If you haven’t gone through the rigorous training or overcome your lower self and you are declaring that you have spiritual authority. You are preparing yourself to go into gunfight without a bulletproof vest or even a weapon, just book knowledge like Shia LeBoef’s character in the cult classic Constantine.

I am not trying to scare you away, but if you are scared you should be, because that is what will make you respect your spirits and all of the other spirits you encounter.   Shamanism is nothing to play around with. If you are serious, respectful and responsible, you will do well, but if not.  You will find yourself days, weeks, months or sometimes even years later waking up wondering, “How the hell did I get here?”

 The Calling

Now there’s a bit of confusion on really what the Calling is about. I will not go into why this confusion exist because we don’t have time, but let me explain what the Calling is about from my perspective.    We have all been in situations where an idea comes to us or a little small voice tell us, “Turn down that road”, “Don’t say that”, “Don’t forget this,” and so on. Then when we don’t listen to it, we find ourselves wishing we had. The reason this occurs is because according to the maa aankh when our ab – soul awareness is introverted and at the Amun Ra moment.  We are open and our aakhu (ancestral spirits), netcharu (guardian spirits) or (as some choose to believe) God, is able to provide us with quick counsel, because the automatic lower part of our being – the sahu – is busy focusing on us walking or some other mundane activity.

When we receive this quick counsel it appears in our awareness as a bright idea, flash of insight, intuitive thought, premonition, an epiphany or an A-ha moment because it is reminiscent of the lunar brilliance of Amun Ra.

The reason we receive this quick counsel is because we are in danger of wandering off course and altering our destiny our purpose – our maa.  So, this quick counsel comes to us like a siren going off breaking the silence. When we receive this quick counsel we need to act upon it because as the maa aankh illustrates the maa connects Amun Ra with the Ra.  This means when we have that premonition, flash of insight, bright idea, an A-ha moment. If we do not act upon it, symbolized as the Ra moment.  It will lead to us having unfortunate circumstances, since the Ra leads to Ra Atum – the setting sun, death or drastic change.

Well, the same thing occurs when we are Called. Many people think that the Calling only refers to being Called to be a shaman or to enter into the pulpit to be a preacher, but the Calling actually refers to be called to implement any physical change as dictated by the Spirit(s). When an individual is Called, they are actually called to be a problem fixer. The reason they are Called is because they are in a position to make things right or bring balance to a situation where there is none.  This is why when you received the calling; you have a sudden awakening or change in consciousness that something is not right. So the things you use to do, you don’t do anymore because you don’t see the logic or see it benefiting anyone.  That’s really what the Calling is about.

We have all heard that if you don’t answer the Calling you will experience setbacks. Well, the reason when you don’t acknowledge the Calling and don’t work to accept it by implementing change you experience problems. Is because remember, when you have an epiphany, a-ha moment, etc. and you don’t act upon it, you have problems for not following your intuition.  Well, the same occurs when you ignore the Calling because you are responsible for making change and it rests on your conscience. You become just as responsible for those creating the problem by not working to eradicate it. The only way to answer the Calling is to work at creating the change that Called you in the first place.

For instance, I have a cousin who was a drug addict but now runs a successful substance abuse program helping others to overcome their addiction. When I asked him what made him change his life and decide to become a substance abuse counselor. He told me that while doing drugs he basically had a vision telling him that he need to stop and help others, but he refused to follow his intuition. He kept having the same vision but he refused to follow it. Then after ignoring his intuition for so long, he had an accident and caught on fire.  After his accident, while recovering he began to go through the proper channels to overcome his addiction and in addition help others. After being clean for several years he began helping others to do the same. So you see, his Calling was also his cure or salvation.

This is rarely mentioned in books, but most people that are Called often find that the solution to their problem lies within them. Most shamans didn’t want to be a shaman. They grew into that role because it was something that they had to do. They overcame certain obstacles and as a result were authorized to help others. An individual that is Called helps themselves by helping others.

So if no one told you or you never read it in a book. I am telling you that your Calling has nothing to do with servicing your selfish lower desires.  It is all about serving and helping others because something within you made you aware of an impending problem that exists in your life and the lives of others. If what you are doing is not helping or benefiting the lives of others, most likely it has nothing to do with your Calling, but rather your ego.  As a matter of fact, if you are trying to pursue or find your Calling, most likely this is ego driven as well, because your Calling is not a goal. It is who you are.

Let me give you an example of what I mean by this and then we will bring this to a close. There is this young man I know who wanted to be an EMT and drive ambulances, but wasn’t sure how to become one because he didn’t have the money to attend school. Then, one day he attended a Pentecostal revival in hopes of getting answers and the minister prophesized that it wasn’t his calling, but that he was called to be a healer. So, this young man began devoting himself to reading the bible and trying to learn how to exorcize demons (or negative spirits) like the preacher he met. When he came to me and told me that he wanted to heal with his hands and be able to exorcise spirits. I told him,

“Listen to me carefully. Be careful what you ask for.  We are put in situations to develop certain skills so that we can manifest the divine in our life.  God (and your spirits) know what you can handle and what you can’t because they can see you maa (purpose).  But, when you go trying to force things to happen that are not part of your maa, you are not following your maa.  The reason you aren’t able to do those things that that ‘healer’ was able to do is because it is not your Calling. If you are Called to do something, a way will be made.”

Of course, he was young and didn’t heed my warning, and kept trying to pursue his dream of being a healer. Then one day I got a call from him. He and his wife had separated then divorced. He was fired from a good paying job he was at, while he bounced back and forth between the part-time jobs he had found. With no money, he ended up moving back in with his parents. Fortunately, things cleared up as soon as he stopped trying to be a healer. His remarried his wife, moved into a new home and got a better paying job, where the company was willing to pay for him to return to school to get his EMT license and certifications.

Clearly the pursuit to be a healer was an illusionary dream and not his Calling or at least at the present.

The Revised Prayer Room

I must apologize for not tending to this blog like I had in the past. This has been a real busy time for me. Those of you who have been following this know that every since my rebirth. I have been on fire. Well, I started writing my new book and here recently I just got a promotion, which proves that the spirits don’t function according to physical laws. They are held by a different set of principles. In other words, they don’t care about it being a recession. That only affects the natural or physical plane. If you fight Set on his playing field using his rules, you’ll never win. That’s why Hru had to get help from Osar.  The whole situation reminded me of a section I am writing in my upcoming book. Here’s a small excerpt…hope you enjoy.

Tarrying for the Spirit

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God…” 1 John 4:1

I am reminded by my ba (guardian angel) of the olden days when people use to tarry for the Holy Ghost the same way. Remember, before salvation became big business how there used to be a Prayer Room and that room was funky.  I mean it smelled funky and had that funky vibe like people had been throwing down.  If you don’t remember, let me tell you. There would be a woman or several women called missionaries (usually dressed in white reminding me of the Santeria Francisca) that would go to this room with you with a bunch of other people. In this little cramped up, no ventilation room (because it was always hot) there would be pews surrounding the walls. Sometimes in one corner there would be a stack of old beat up bibles with curled covers.  You would go kneel on the floor and repeat only two phrases, “Thank you Jesus” and “Hallelujah” over and over. Eventually, you would do it so much that you would begin speaking gibberish or what is called “speaking in tongues,” because none of what you said makes logical sense. This is how you knew you got the Holy Ghost. This is what was called Tarrying for the Spirit.

             Now, the fact that I grew up in the church and saw people get struck by the Spirit who would speak in tongues in a minute, then right after they left church would revert right back to their backstabbing, lying, cheating and you name it, hellish ways. I had to conclude that these people weren’t struck by the “Holy Spirit” but simply by a “spirit”, and that spirit most likely was someone that was very close to them. Of course, if this individual would have been properly educated about spirits they would have known that their actions, behaviors and thoughts attracted certain types of spirits to them. This is the reason most likely the individual reverted back to their old ways. Now that we have a better understand what spirits are.  What we need is that old prayer room, but this time it needs to be revised to represent all of the spirits.  So that we know which spirits we are attracting and which ones are not of God.

How to Communicate with the Egyptian Gods/Goddesses (Netcharu)

My bad…My bad…You know, when I first posted information about the netcharu or Kamitic guardian spirits on the “Who and What Are the Ancient Egyptian Gods?“, I posted the Roman Catholic correspondences because the saints help me to assist those coming from this background.  I forgot to post their Christian associations, which are the forms these guardian spirits took when they first communicated to me, since I come from a fundamentalist Christian background.  I will post their corresponding forms in this post, but before doing this I wanted to explain how I made these connections.

I was not trying to plug and play but really trying to understand how these guardian angels could speak with me. I knew that others like Ra Un Nefer Amen of the Ausar Auset Society had done it using surviving information from the Indus Kush and Yoruba tradition to make a connection, but I was in the spiritual desert or TASETT (see the maa aankh) at the time. I didn’t know anything about the Indus Kush or Yoruba tradition when I first began. So I would have to try and understand both of those traditions just to scratch the surface of what I needed. I went through this arduous and long intellectual process because as I stated I was raised as an Apostolic Pentecostal Christian, which basically means “Jesus only!” For those of you who don’t know what this means, let me give you a real brief explanation.  This faith, along with Jehovah Witnesses, believes that if you do not accept Jesus (or Jehovah in the case of Jehovah Witnesses) as your sole lord and savior that your soul is going to hell (or annihilated). Your salvation is in the hands of the Lord and while giving up one’s individuality and the right to question God was considered heresy.  So, even though culturally speaking I was raised to believe in spiritual beings that we called angels or ministering spirits.  Talking to them was seen as border lining on devil worship in their eyes, so in a way you were raised to ignore your culture.

I had read numerous books on the subject and still had no clear understanding of these spirits until I met my Cuban padrino who told me a story about the orishas. Papa, the name I called him, told me a legend he learned when he was in Cuba. I am giving a condense form of the story but he basically goes like this. At bars, when Oggun comes in with Oshun, all hell breaks loose because Oshun only has eyes for Chango, which leads to Oggun and Chango fighting and that’s when Ochosi comes and carts everyone to jail.  As Elegua sits in the corner laughing at the mischief he just caused.

If you ever went to a party or bar and witnessed fighting this is usually how it occurs, which gave me the foundation I needed to connect with the netcharu myself.  It was shamanic meditation that helped me to move beyond the intellectual phase of just giving a definition of the netcharu, to actually interacting with them.

Since the Kamitic writers of old did not leave any texts explaining who and what the netcharu were and where they came from, a number of theories have been created to fill the intellectual void. Some believe they were created out of the blue, while others believe that they were anthropomorphized from nature.  I think that both of these theories are an insult to the Kamitic people of old intelligence and believed that these guardian spirits were once upon living people. For instance, the first legendary ruler of Kamit who united the kingdom was King Menes also known as King Narmer. This is no netchar named Narmer but, the closest netchar resembling these historic feats is Osar.

Why was King Narmer given another name you might ask? I don’t know for sure but my guess is that by honoring him using his name he could really only be honored as an ancestor by immediate family. By rewarding him the name Osar he was able to be honored as a saint by all people, including those outside of his family lineage. This way anyone knowing the important points of his story, because the historical account of Osar (Narmer) at this time was probably lost, could invoke the memory of the first king.  It was by admiring the positive attributes of the individual that these guardian spirits or ancestral archetypes were created that we call netcharu.  But as previously stated, the Kamitic people didn’t leave any texts explaining who the netcharu were, so with no existing information on them what do you do? How do you make contact with them? Well, by relying upon my Christian upbringing and Afro-spiritual culture.  I recalled that when the early Africans were brought to Protestant Christian North America, they were not able to create the same type of religious syncretism that their kin had done in the Caribbean and South America. They took the existing knowledge that they brought with them from Africa and using the bible created or “conjured” their own ancestral archetypes.  Using the same technique with the Kamitic guardian spirits and the bible, I conjured the netcharu and they are:

Osar (Osiris by the Greek) is Jesus

Oset  (Isis) is Mary the mother of Jesus

Hru manifested himself to me as King David from his extraordinary, naïve triumphs of a child over the giant to the humbling positioning he was placed in due to his arrogance, chauvinism and abuse of power.

Nebhet is Queen Esther, the queen that used beauty, riches and pleasure to defeat her enemy.

Hruaakhuti is none other than the two sword wielding apostle Peter

Sokar is the biblical Job who showed me how to be persistent and dance in the face of trials, tribulations, obstructions and especially illness. It was Sokar that taught me that the righteous are the ones that are reborn.

Maat appeared to me as John the Baptist the jailed prophesier who abided by and preached to the people about the Law

Djahuti is King Solomon, the alleged wisest man in the bible.

Npu is the lucky, faithful and optimistic Joseph the Dreamer. Another one of Npu’s avatars is the biblical Moses.

These ancestral archetypes that our ancestors conjured helped me to communicate with the guardian spirits or netcharu.  One lesson I had to learn was that Spirit is unlimited. It is not bound by time and space nor is it confined to rigidness of color, ethnicity or affiliation. Spirit can manifest itself through anyone and anything.  The connection has to be based upon energy.  This understanding helped me to see that even though these ancestral archetypes are not as prevalent as they were years ago. A comparison between the Kamitic legend, the biblical stories and documentaries about African American culture will give you a connection to the netcharu.  For instance, you can see the dreaming and great oratory skills of Npu manifested in Joseph the Dreamer and Moses in many preachers and leaders like Martin L. King Jr.  The same brute and sharp swords of Hruaakhuti can be seen in the Apostle Peter expressed through Malcolm X. The wisdom of Djahuti seen in the words of Solomon is expressed in the late great John H. Clarke. While the courageous, golden tongue and heir of Osar, Hru can be read about in King David’s biblical psalms and other great adventures, and seen in Muhammad Ali, and so on. Through them one can see how to invoke the power of God for self-improvement and wellbeing.

Communion for Osar (Asar, Ausar, Osiris)? How Religious Syncretism Occurs

OMG! I can’t believed it happened but it did? Today is Easter and it is celebrated by Christians worldwide as the resurrection or ascension of Jesus Christ. And, if I had not had my unique Afro-experience. I would be celebrating Christ’s resurrection as well, but I did have that unique experience and it changed my perspective on it all.

To make a long story short, my Afro-experience began when I was searching for God. I had already read a number of books, so I knew already of the so-called “pagan” origins of Christmas, Easter, St. John the Baptist Day, etc. and how these holidays related to the solstices and equinoxes. I understood what it meant intellectually, but when I met my padrino, a little black man from Cuba.  He totally gave me a different perspective on the whole picture.

Papa, I called him, was a babalawo in the Lukumi/Santeria religion, a member of the all-male exclusive Abakwa society and an omo of Ellegua. Like many practicing santeros (practitioner of Lukumi/Santeria), he was also a Catholic and his Afro-religious beliefs were blended with Catholicism.  A concept that is very hard for a lot of us that weren’t raised in North America to understand.

Anyway, one day I remember while talking to Papa he told me that it was his custom (from how he learned the religion) that when it is Easter, to place white kerchiefs over the faces of the orishas/saints/spirits to recognize the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Now, for an Apostolic Pentecostal, preacher kid, that raised in North America, it was very hard for me see how religious syncretism between the African and Christian ideologies could exist. So, placing anything on an object and even having such an icon was foreign to me. Fortunately, Papa somewhat seeing my confusion displayed on my face, with a smirk told me to write it down in my libro (spiritual notebook) anyway, like he knew one day it would all make sense. So, I did just that.

In time I lost contact with Papa but as the years went by I would on occasion read what I had transcribed from Papa in my libro, which helped me in the lonely times.  During the time as I made my transition from the spiritual intellectual to practicing spiritual principles. I learned that  the Catholic church was well-known for constructing cathedrals on top of indigenous religious sites, which helped to strengthen the Church’s agenda but it also encouraged religious syncretism. Some of the earlier churches were constructed in…Guess? That’s right Egypt, which were influenced by the Copts (Christianized Egyptians), who derived a bulk of their spiritual practices from their earlier ancient Egyptian or Kamitic ancestors. In fact, some scholars are now in agreement that most of the Christian ideologies about angels was directly due to the Copts, but that’s another post.

Anyway, when my relationship with my spirits finally began to blossom from intellectualizing them to seeing them as archetypes that represent the multi-facets of life. Osar (Asar, Ausar or Osiris) the Kamitic Obatala or Oxala became the spirit that represented the lessons learned from Kamitic communalism and ideas about peace and unity. It occurred after reading the Story of Osar so many times that it began to become a metaphorical tool used by my Spirit.

That’s when it happened. It wasn’t by design (at least I didn’t plan it)… All I know is that my Afro-spirit took over and the next thing I know Osar and Jesus were combined, because spirits aren’t supposed to represent the  perfect aspects of life, but the various ways one can choose to live their life. Osar is the spirit that truly wants peace, prosperity and knowledge for all people regardless of who they are and where an individual comes from, just like Jesus.  Destruction, sin, violence, war, etc. are all due to ignorance, lack of self-discipline, hatred, jealousy, etc., which are the by-products of Set, the envious and youngest brother of Osar, who later became Set-an or Satan in Christian lore.

So when Jesus was crucified by the Romans, my Afro-spirit saw it as Osar being murdered by Set.  When Jesus tells his disciples to eat of the bread and wine in remembrance of  him. You guessed it right… My Afro-spirit saw it as Osar’s body that was hacked up into 14 pieces by Set (See the Story of Osar), to prevent Osar from being “RE-MEMBERED.” Can, I get an Amen?

I didn’t know that this religious blending had occurred within me until I went to church today. I only did it out of respect for my mom.   (Yeah, my faith is strong like that, besides I am not heartless… got to meet the people where they are at. Smile.)  Anyway… they did communion and I didn’t want to participate but Spirit told me to do so anyway. When, I did…that’s when it was confirmed to me and that’s when I witnessed religious syncretism.

The next thing I knew, this salt-less, hard, tasteless cracker was indeed the body of Lord Osar and the bitter red wine, which by the way all alcoholic beverages are taboo to pure spirits of the white cloth – Osar, Obatala, Oxala, the Dravidian Tara, etc.. When I drank the wine, it reminded me of the beverage that led to Osar’s death. The partaking of this ritual gave me a closer connection to Osar because it reminded me of my responsibilities to my community and the peace that Osar expects from me.

After communion, the congregation sung a portion of a Christian hymn by Alfred H. Ackley called He Lives. Like many Black churches, they never sing the whole song only the most pertinent portion of the hymn. The words are….

I serve a risen Savior
He’s in the world today
I know that He is living,
Whatever men may say;
I see His hand of mercy,
I hear His voice of cheer,
And just the time I need Him
He’s always near.

He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives today!
He walks with me and He talks with me
Along life’s narrow way.
He lives, He live, salvation to impart
You ask me how I know He lives:
He lives within my heart.

Religious Syncretism occurs whenever you begin making comparisons with another culture’s religious perspective. We naturally learn by associating new ideas with old ideas that we have in our personal spirit/subconscious. So, what this means is that there is nothing new under the sun.  Yes, you ask me how I know Osar lives…it is because He lives within my heart.  Sidebar…This means that the revolution against Set is truly on. How to Become a Shaman

Are you called to be shaman? If you are how do you know? If you aren’t how do you know? If you don’t want to be a shaman but would like to take advantages of some of the shamanic practices and techniques. Can you? Are you allowed to or not? Do you have to be initiated to be a shaman? These are all questions that I once had after I finally submitted and embarked upon this quest.  And I will share what I have learned with you from my experience.

First it is important to understand, that every world culture has an individual or group of individuals that has acted as a mediator between the spiritual and the physical. These eccentric individuals have been called medicine man/woman, viziers, spiritual healer, witch doctor, etc. but the most prevalent term used today is shaman and the practice is called shamanism. Shamanism is the general term that has been used incorrectly to describe any person that feels that God, the Great Spirit, the ancestors, spirit guides and/or guardian spirits have called them to help others through spiritual means, which has contributed to the confusion of the term. So to clarify, it must be understood that a shaman can be a preacher, psychic, counselor, medicine man or woman, herbalists, priest or priestess, medical intuitive, psychic healer, etc. but a preacher, psychic, counselor, medicine man or woman, herbalists, priest or priestess, medical intuitive, psychic healer, doesn’t necessarily have to be a shaman. The key difference being that a shaman usually has a unique perspective about life whereas the other healers do not.

The reason the shaman’s viewpoint is so different from the other healers is because he or she have undergone either a formal initiation (e.g. apprenticeship, ceremonial rites, etc.) or informal initiation (e.g. life transforming event via gross misfortune, illness, etc.). During this (formal or informal) initiation, the initiate is forced to overcome old traumatic issues, including their anger, fear, hatred, feelings of abandonment and other emotional wounds, in order to learn how not to be controlled by their emotions but rather guided by their intuition. During this transformative period, the initiate comes face to face with death, where they learn that death is not “the end” but simply a stage in the cycle of birth-life-death and rebirth. In this unique experience, which cannot accurately be intellectualized, but has to be experience, the initiate usually meets her or his ancestors, spirit guides or spirits, which leads them to adopting a new perspective about life reflective of this experience. This new perspective about life that the shaman initiate adopts, usually becomes the cosmology or cosmogram that the initiate follows.

It is through this cosmogram the shaman initiate is able to move beyond their personal preferences and societal imposed prejudices, which allows them to see everything (plants, animals, human beings, etc.) in the universe as an interdependent part of a whole. It is here the initiate begins to see him or herself as a microcosm of a greater Macrocosm, and learns that all is composed of divine energy. The life cycle the initiate soon learns is based upon a natural exchange between the spiritual and the physical. It then becomes apparent that in order to implement any positive change. They have to learn how to petition the right the force that will bring about the type of change that they desire. The shaman learns about this exchange by observing these forces in nature and seeing that just like the right conditions are needed in order for wild game to return to a particular area. The same conditions are needed to make an individual prosperous and so on.

It is this observation that makes the initiate take responsibility for her and his actions. This is how the true shamanic journey begins because the initiate is not perfect by any means, but is expected to perfect his or her character. This is the reason why shamans from all over the world may not profess to be Buddhist, Jewish, Christian, Hindu, Muslim or any one religion. They will easily practice the tenets of major religions like loving their neighbor as themselves, and acknowledge that seeing ourselves separate from one another will lead to our ultimate demise. Where shamanism differs from major religions, is that it is not governed by religious dogma but by the calling, which is dictated by the laws of nature.

These laws are taught to the shaman initiate by the same one(s) that called them per that individual’s culture. Therefore, violation of these laws may not be punishable by man but they are punishable through God, the Great Spirit, ancestors, spirit guides, or the guardian spirits that called the individual to be a shaman, because the rapport that the initiate has developed with his or her guides through the initiation process is very strong and personal. So when a true shaman breaks a taboo they make amends as soon as possible, and try to live in harmony with others, because it will weaken their spiritual power, connection with their spirit guides and may result in them losing divine blessing or grace. No true shaman would risk jeopardizing this for a quick selfish, monetary thrill.

Because shamanism differs in every country, culture, region, etc. what may be norm in one area may be completely different in another. For instance, in South America, Amerindian shamans use entheogens like peyote, whereas Amerindian shamans in North America do not. All shamans don’t engage in “vision quest” just to get an answer nor do they have to use a drum and rattle to enter and maintain an ecstatic state of trance. Clearly, all shamans are not created equal but there are some general norms that exist about shamans. For one, they are not chauvinistic nor are they feminist either. They see the purpose of both natures. True shamans also do not have on their walls their list of accomplishments. They do not sit back and brag about their accomplishments or drop names to prove how strong and powerful they are to impress people. One look into their eyes and you will be able to see if they are for real or a charlatan.

Now, don’t get me wrong, all shamans are not extremely humble or meek individuals, nor are they all eccentric individuals either. They do boast but their boasts, which may come off as arrogance is not meant to impress the living. It is to glorify their spirits on one hand, cause negative spirits to tremble and flee on the other, and strengthen their own faith. Another thing, true shamans don’t go looking for trouble or imbalances. Trouble or imbalances seems to find them (at least this has been my experience), and they use the situation to create balance.

Overall, I must admit that the shamanic journey is a wonderful and rewarding journey because a shaman helps him or herself by helping others. This is why it is said that shamans a wounded healers because most shamans specialize in healing situations that they have or had to overcome themselves. This is what makes shamans exceptional over other healers, because they are a reflection of what they have accomplished and believed. If a shaman will heal a relationship between a husband and wife, it is because they usually have done the same for their relationship and so on.

As your intuition develops, you will know when it is time to help others because you will find yourself (with no effort of your own) being asked to assist another in resolving a situation. You may be walking down the street to the park and get a hunch to say a prayer to bless and protect the children at the park from harm. Then, you may get an idea to solidify your prayer by building a small makeshift altar out of sticks and rocks. These are all signs that you have been called to put your skills to service.

The great thing about shamanism is that it is honest and a powerful universal practice full of wonder. True shamanism doesn’t lie and tell you what you want to hear just to get your money, participation and membership. It is a real gut practice that presents to you the problem and helps you to find ways to resolve it so that the problem never occurs again. It tells you what you need to hear (in the gentle or harshest way possible). In order to get you to do what you have been called to do, which is fulfill your destiny or purpose in life. These are some of the things that I have learned in my own journey, which by the way is unique per individual. It is through this shamanic walk I also discovered that if you are called and ignore your calling. You will wish you hadn’t, not because your spirit guides will punish you, but because the next stage of your development requires that you accept your calling in order to advance forward. Another thing I learned that just because you accept your calling, it will not eliminate humiliation, misery, pain and suffering out of your life. Shamanism will however, help you to develop the peace and power needed to navigate right through it, thus making you a more resilient and strong individual.

But, the shamanic journey is not an easy path to follow because it can be very challenging at times. Not to mention that finding a true spiritual teacher in these contemporary times can be painstakingly difficult. And, if you have been called to become a shaman or just to partake in the practice. It can be a bit confusing especially when there is no one to help you. So to help ease the headache, here are some recommendations I have compiled based upon my experience.

Instead of wasting your time and money, borrowing and imitating another’s cultural practices without being sure if you have been called or not. I suggest that you begin by investigating your own spiritual heritage. For instance, if you come from a Christian tradition, try to understand how you or your family got into that tradition and why you are or are not in that tradition today. Ask yourself the hard questions like are you involved in the religion because you were raised in it and know nothing else? Are you not in this religion because you don’t agree with their political or social views? In other words you don’t like what they said, etc. This will help you to clarify your purpose of embarking on the shamanic path. Far too often, many of us jump around from faith to faith because we don’t know what we are looking for.

Once you have done that, then I would recommend that you research and learn about traditional practices of your ancestors. If you cannot do this then learn about the traditional practices of your distant ancestors. For instance, I being of African and Native American descent in the Unite States, was not able to learn about my ancestral path due to slavery. I was however able to learn about the Kamitic (ancient Egyptians) civilization, which was the greatest, longest standing and most influential African civilization that has existed. That many scholars have culturally tied to Sub-Saharan Africa. It was through my research, Kamit became a gateway that led me to discover that my family has a heavy Kongo influence. Through this I discovered the shamanic path that I walk today, which is why I refer to it as Kamitic shamanism.

So, research your distant ancestral path because through it you will discover your Way and find if you have been called to be a shaman or a “keeper of the flame” sort-of-speak, which is someone meant to help their family, friends and others they come in contact versus being a shaman who services an entire community. When you have honestly completely these two steps. If you have been called you will have a stronger conviction of your calling because you will be find yourself being initiated (formally or informally).

Interesting thing. Here recently, I was honoring the guardian spirits Oset and Nebhet (Nephthys, Hathor, Het Hru, Oshun, Mama Chola, etc.). And, suddenly I found myself engaged in a conversation with my wife and another Sis on the greatness. It was through the conversation, I was reminded why the Kamitic people became great. For those of you who don’t know, I travel back and forth from Michigan and Kansas. Kansas is a flat, boring and full of farmland. And, for the longest I never knew why I was brought to Kansas until I began witnessing numerous natural events that occurred like tornadoes.  I have witnessed a number of tornadoes, in fact, one of the deadliest tornadoes that hit Kansas occurred several years back in Greensburg, Kansas. This was the tornado that destroyed the whole town.  I mean it wiped the entire town off the face of the earth, which prompted former President G.W. Bush to visit (after his poor support due to Katrina) and a television show about green technology.  The interesting thing about this tornado, is that my father was just in that town 30 minutes prior to the tornado touching down.

Even though I am born and raised city mouse, while living in Kansas (farm country) there are some pretty interesting characteristics that I have picked up. It is because living in a area where the nearest major city is some three to four hours away, you learn to observe the things in nature, such as the way the animals act, the formation of clouds, how the wind blows, the smell of rain, etc. These are all signs or peculiar traits of a farmer that most city dwellers don’t know. You only pick up these traits when you live in rural areas like when you see a lot of cows sitting in the pasture, it symbolizes that rain is coming soon.These are the peculiar traits that our ancestors along the Nile River had and developed because they were one of the world’s first (if not the first) agriculturalists that were in tune with nature. People amaze me talking about how animals can be used as an early warning system to signify catastrophe because of the tsunami that hit Indonesia a few years back. Well, the only way they can be used in that sense is if you are in tuned with the Spirit of God or Nature.

But, the Kamitic people didn’t become great because of their discovery of agricultural science. While this contributed to them becoming a prosperous and powerful nation. The Kamitic society became great because of their women.  Let me say this again because I know a lot of you are use to hearing how bold the warriors were and great their kings were, because we live in a very chauvinistic Anglo society that values physical strength and might.  These are great but when they are not balanced they lead to the current state society is in now.  So, let me say it again, Kamit did not become a great nation because of these men.  They became great because of their WOMEN. That’s right, it was the SISTAHS, that made Kamit Great.

You see, thankfully the men of Kamit were humble (not weak but not arrogant and chauvinistic) and they took what the women did and made it into a science. They took the symbols and signs that women dreamed of and codified it into a symbolic language, which led to Kamit become a powerful, spiritual nation. The men of Kamit understood that they were by divine design very extroverted and in order to make things work, had to work with their counterpart, the women of Kamit, who introverted.   A true study of the Kamitic culture will reveal that the women were the Kamitic men’s secret weapon, this is why Oset was so loved and why in the Kamitic legends she is so despised by the enemy Set. Women in traditional indigenous societies weren’t prized possessions (as they are viewed in Anglo and Arabic societies). They were prized counterparts, which is why in Kamit women had similar rights as men including the right to divorce, own land and even join the priesthood – churches and religious institutions are still struggling with this one.  It is sad in this crazy world, in order for women to get respect they got to show that they are as tough as a man or they have to parade their excessively flaunt and parade their sexuality.  I remember one of the sweetest rappers back in the day was MC Lyte. Back when a rapper could blow up the spot and cap on another rapper without them and their loved ones being harmed…MC Lyte stumped lyrically beat the stank out of male and female rappers. Let’s not even talk about all those Roxanne and UTFO. (Wow Ole’ Skool).

Anyway, in traditional society.  Women were valued co-workers because they represented that mysterious part of the puzzle that exists in Nature that men cannot figure out. (That’s why we can’t win an argument! Smile).  It was only after the Euro-Indo influence that women were more valued for their sexuality and ability to produce.  Don’t believe me…watch, if you can stomach it…the movie Alexander (I still haven’t seen all of this film. My spirit will not let me do it :)). Alexander didn’t know what to do with his wife played by Rosario Dawson.  Anglos not understanding the power of women, whenever  women acted themselves classified them as witches and burned them at the stake…remember Salem.  By the way, they did this all throughout Europe. They just didn’t Understand.  Westerners have always had a problem with women, which is why they blamed women for the downfall of humankind. That whole original sin thing. This stigma continues to this day, which is why many still feel it is a curse to be a woman. This is not how indigenous people around the world saw women. Our civilization was as a great as our women. If a society was great it was a reflection of the Queen Bees.

So, let me show you how this mysterious and magical thing with women work.  To use a previous example, all of the women in my family believe that if they dream of fish it indicates that someone in the family is pregnant.  They believe this because it has never failed. In fact my wife had a dream about fish and saw my cousin’s face in it and wondered what it meant. I told her it means, my cousin is pregnant and although my cousin tried to keep it secret, most of the women in my family already knew because of similar dreams and hunches. Now, what’s interesting is that besides my wife, none of the women in my family know anything about Kamitic spirituality.  Which is why it surprises them when I tell them fish are a sign of abundance and children (this is a symbolic message from the Spirit) that fall under the protection of the guardian spirit or netcharu of fertility, motherhood and pregnancy Oset (Aset, Auset, Isis, the Virgin Mary, Mother of Pearls, etc.).

Now, as I have previously stated, my mother, aunts, sister-in-laws, female cousins, etc. don’t know anything about Kamitic spirituality. They consider themselves to be God-fearing Christians women, but they are influenced by Oset as you can clearly see. This begs one to ask, are they worshiping an idol? Clearly not.  These women from different backgrounds, different affiliations and ethnicity (we have African, Native American and Latin influences in my family tree) are united because of their cultural experience and ancestral legacy, which they might be aware of or not.  This is why our ancestors along the Nile called this division of the Spirit that deals with motherhood, childhood, fertility, pregnancy, etc. Oset.



Oset is not a deity.  She is a guardian spirit, an archetype or whatever you want her to be to help you to understand the Spirit of Motherhood that can be found in Nature or Netcher and within the human being.  Nature is derived from the Latin word natura which comes from the Kamitic word Netcher – the generic term for God.   It comes from God.  Our indigenous male ancestors just put a name on it in order to better understand the complexities of the Spirit because that is how most of our human brain works. We have to understand things logically. We have to make sense of it before we can sign off on it. Unfortunately, some of us are brains are too polarized in this way of thinking, which is why most Westerners are still stuck between  Baltic Avenue and Oriental Place in regards to our Spiritual traditions, because they are biologically and culturally unaware.  They just don’t get it.

When we ignore the notion that our ancestors (along the Nile, throughout Africa, throughout indigenous America, etc.) worshiped deities and false idols, and simply categorized natural events in a sophisticated, symbolic, cultural manner which the Kamitic people called paut neteru/netcharu. It begins to make sense how our ancestors along the Nile were able to advance at such a high level. Like farmers they had to work hand and hand with Nature/Netcher, whom they called by the way Nebertcher – The Lord of Everything.  This is how the core netcharu came into being:

  • Osar (Asar, Ausar, Osiris) the Lord of the Dead is the guardian spirit of peace, wisdom, purity, knowledge and fertility. Associated with the Resurrected Jesus and La Virgin de las Mercedes.
  • Oset (Aset, Ast, Auset, Isis) the Mother of Revolution is the guardian spirit of positive change and motherhood. Associated with the Virgin Mary, Virgin de la Regla and Virgen of the Miraculous Medals.
  • Hru (Hra, Heru, Horus) the Heir of Osar is the guardian spirit of victory, success and triumph. Associated with Samson, King David and St. Barbara.
  • Djahuti (Tahuti, Tehuti, Thoth) the Lord of Change is the guardian spirit of divination. Associated with King Solomon and St. Francis of Assisi.
  • Nebhet (Nephtys) Lady of the House is the guardian spirit love, beauty, pleasure, money and peace. Associated with Mary Magdalene and La Virgin de la Caridad del Cobre.
  • Sokar (Sokher, Seker) Lord of the Cemetery is the guardian spirit of resurrection, renewal and illness. Associated with Lazarus.
  • Npu (Anpu, Enpu, Anubis) the Messenger/Traveler between the Living and Dead, is the guardian spirit of guidance. The master of the cross-road.  Associated with the Moses and El Nino de la Atocha.
  • Maat the Gatekeeper of Life/Death is the guardian spirit of balance, righteousness and sanity. Associated with Joshua and St. Norbert.
  • Hruaakhuti (Ra-Hor-kahuti, Bedhuty, Herukhuti) Lord of the Double Horizon, is the guardian spirit of justice. Associated with the disciple Peter and St. George the Destroyer of Dragons.

The Kamitic devil (sort of speak) is called Set.  Set is the spirit of War, chaos, destruction, confusion, imbalance. You name it. He has his hand in it, which is why he later became Set-an and Satan in the Christian tradition.  So, when the tornado his Greensburg, I knew it was Set, because Set is the author of confusion, chaos and destruction. Unlike the Judeo-Christian belief in the devil that sees the devil as opposing God.  Ancient African science teaches that this whole good/bad dichotomy is all meant to establish balance.  For instance, because I see Set as a real force/energy, that brings destruction, his presence also signals rebirth and change. Prime example, Greensburg, Kansas is being rebuilt with new, green technology.

In “What is the Kamitic Way of Life?: Part I”, I mention how I met my padrino an old Cuban man that opened my eyes to a lot of things and taught me about building a spiritual boveda or bóveda (espiritismo). Papa was an omo-Ellegua (Child of the guardian angel/orisha Ellegua – the Yoruba opener of the Way). My Npu guided both of us to meet.  Again, some people call it magical because they prefer to quote scriptures and talk about what they think God can do but don’t want to walk on faith and make the word of God flesh (proof). When you walk on faith, it becomes a wonderful experience because God answers your prayers. I know not when things are blocked and I ask for a way to be open, I get a message from God when I see three dogs hanging on a street corner or three dogs out of nowhere cross the street forcing me to stop and pay attention. (These are all signs of Npu).

This is just an example of what Spiritual Sciences can do for you, because that’s just one division of the Spirit of God that governs one particular aspect of nature. People that don’t understand the nature of the Spirit and how God communicates to us calls this superstitions. I guess the burning bush that Moses saw would be considered superstitious too.  This is because we have been conditioned into believing that God has to make some miraculous and extraordinary sign for us to say, “Hey God is speaking to me.” As you can see, there is a part of us that has to understand things and a part of us we have to shut down and use faith to see things.  Remember according to contemporary science God doesn’t exist…but something within us knows this is not true. This is how the Kamitic men dealt with things as well. They recognized that their sistahs could see access things that they as men could not at the time.

Now, imagine if the women in my family (and all over) who believed that fish signifies pregnancy truly began to re-educate themselves about their own spirituality…what would really happen?  Did you get goosebumps? I know I did. :)

***Please note that cultural and religious syncretism doesn’t truly occur by intellectualizing. True syncretism or dissimulation – the deliberate of mixing beliefs and influence in order to preserve and maintain a tradition – occurs by noting observable practical similarities.   This is why I don’t identify the Yoruba Oggun and Oya with Set because they are not the same, although they have simlarities. ****

The Origin of KAMTA: Kamitic/Kemetic Shamanism

Kamitic/Kemetic spirituality or way of life means a lot of things to a lot of people because Kamit/Kemet has and always will be a source of inspiration to generations and for generations to come. For some Kamitic/Kemeitc spirituality/way of life is an initiation system that focuses upon reconnecting to Nebertcher or God in order to expand one’s consciousness.  With the sole hope of declaring before their life came to an end that they are Osar (Asar, Ausar, Osiris).  For others Kamitic/Kemetic spirituality/way of life is about recreating, reconstructing and rebuilding the Kamitic/Kemetic society of old in order to restore Maa (balance, law, order, truth, etc.) to our hell bent society.  But for the Land of Kam, Kamitic/Kemetic spirituality/way of life is all about assisting the individual to improve their daily lives through the power of God. Unlike other Kamitic/Kemetic inspired traditions that begin with the conflict between Hru (Hrw, Heru, Horus) and Set in the Story of Osar (Asar, Ausar, Osiris). The basis of the Land of Kam spiritual practice also called KAMTA (the Black Lands) centers around the pragmatic knowledge of the Kamitic/Kemetic people and their Story of Ra and Oset.

The Kamitic/Kemetic Influences from Nature

Like most stories and traditions of indigenous people, the people of Kamit/Kemet’s beginnings is heavily influenced by how they migrated to the region, acquired food, whether by hunting animals or through agriculture, and developed into a peaceful society. According to the history of the Kamitic/Kemetic people, their country was divided into two regions due to the north flowing Nile River. The southern region of Kamit/Kemet was called the Upper Kamit or KAMTA (the Black Lands), which is where the name of this practice derives from. This region because the mouth of the Nile began in the south, had fertile dark soil, which made it possible for the Kamitic/Kemetic people to have lush crops, which naturally attracted lots of wild game that could be hunted.  It was because of this rich fertile soil, the Kamitic/Kemetic people were able to develop the science of agriculture, which laid the foundation for them to become prosperous. The Kamitic/Kemetic people didn’t know how or why the Nile flowed from the south to the north (it was a mystery) but by observing the stars and the planets, they were able to mark when the Nile would flood, this eventually is what led to the people creating the calendar.

The northern region of Kamit/Kemet that opened up to the Mediterranean was called Lower Kamit or TASETT (the Red Lands).  This was because this region for the most part was very arid and the terrain was difficult to work.  The lack of fertile soil made this what is imagined to be a very windy region that has the ability to dry one’s eyes, hence the origin of the Evil Eye. This coupled with the fact that nomadic warring tribes it appears fought constantly in this northern region for resources led to TASETT for the most part being seen as a harsh desert section of the country.

So you see it was from this astute observation of nature, the southern region known as KAMTA called Upper Kamit was equated with fertility, prosperity, abundance, peace, blessings, stability, strength, water, night sky (heavens), mystery, the south, etc. While TASETT was associated with infertility, impotence, poverty, limitation, war, chaos, violence, fire, weakness, physical land, the north, etc. It wouldn’t be long afterwards that these influences would eventually be grafted into legends, myths and stories used to validate cultural practices. As time moved on it became general knowledge amongst the Kamitic/Kemetic people of the dyadic relationship that existed between the two regions. It was simple; it was always KAMTA/TASETT, mystery/known, secret/unveiled, invisible/visible, spirit/physical, dead/living, dark/light and night/day.  The reader will note that this would appear to be a contradiction because you may have heard that Set was the devil and Hru was associated with the day.  A thorough analysis of the Kamitic/Kemetic legends will reveal that this was not the case originally.  Originally Set was good but eventually usurped by Hru who became associated with light and day and Set became associated with evil. Early Christians copied this word for word, which is why the devil in Christian lore was associated with being a good angel before being kicked out of heaven. Set still carries some of his old names as being the Lord of Light. Returning back to our subject, one of those stories that are often overlooked is the Story of Ra and Oset.

The Kamitic/Kemetic Story of Ra and Oset

The Story of Ra and Oset begins with Oset wanting Ra’s power so that she could become a divine being. She believed that if she could discover Ra’s real name, which he kept secret she could gain control over him and become as great as he.  Through magical means Oset created a serpent and laid it upon Ra’s path so that when he came across it, the serpent would strike him and make him ill. When the poison of the serpent caused Ra’s skin to boil with fever and his bones to shake. Ra states that he has a multitude of names and a multitude of forms”. As Ra grows weaker and Oset persists to ask him to give her his real name, Ra states all of the things that he has created and that he is Khepera in the morning, Ra at noon and Tmu (or Atum) in the evening. Finally, having no other choice, Ra secretly revealed his real name to Oset so that it would be hidden to others. He does so by transferring his name from his body to hers, thus revealing that Ra dwells within. Then the story ends with the impression that Ra’s real name had, not been revealed.

In order to fully understand the story one has to have an understanding of the Kamitic/Kemetic language and philosophy. When Ra states that he has a multitude of names and a multitude of forms, it indicates that Ra is not the God or the Supreme Being as Egyptologists have claimed, but an attribute, part or section of the God. When Ra states all of the things that he has created and responds that he is Khepera in the morning, Ra at noon and Tmu (or Atum) in the evening. He reveals that he is not the sun but that his name is associated with the moments of the sun.  In other words, his real name is what gives him purpose and declares what he is supposed to do. Finally having no choice and forced to give in to Oset wishes, when he reveals his real name to Oset he does so in secret by transferring his real name from his body to hers. We learn that the real name of Ra or the real Ra resides within. The real name of Ra is secret, hidden and is called Amun Ra, which means Hidden or Concealed Ra. The real Ra that Ra transfers from his body to the body of Oset derived from the Kamitic/Kemetic word “ra” meaning energy, power, strength, etc. It is the Kamitic equivalent of the Semitic “el” which means the same thing and is used the same way as prefix and suffix to various words. The real Ra that dwells within is the life force, the Holy Ghost, the Power or the Spirit of God that exists everywhere and in everything.

When all of this is taken into consideration, compared with other traditional African systems – particularly the Kongo Cross – and put together according to the moments of the sun: Khepera is marked by the rising sun (sunrise), Ra by midday sun (noon), Ra Atum by the evening sun (sunset) and Amun Ra by midnight. Together these four moments of Ra graphically create the cosmogram called the maa aankh.  To the trained eye or the one who was biologically or culturally akin to the Kamitic/Kemetic people generally speaking Khepera is birth, Ra is life, Ra Atum is death and Amun Ra is rebirth. This is why activities pertaining to life in Kamit/Kemet were associated with Khepera, the rising sun and the east, which is where the practice of facing east derived from.It was originally done to initiate or stimulate rebirth.  Today African American hymns still make reference to the east, just listen to the Winans song Tomorrow or Anita Baker and the Winans song Ain’t No Need to Worry. An analysis of the Kamiti/Kemetic culture will also reveal that activities associated with Ra Atum, the setting sun, and the west, were also associated with death, and so on.

Kamitic/Kemetic Spirituality

As you can see, the Kamitic/Kemetic people were a very ingenious group of people that tried as best they could to protect their country from foreign invaders from the north, which they associated with the color red, that the reader will recall was associated with the younger brother Set, Lower Kamit and TASETT. The two lands of Kamit/Kemet are likened to the head (upper) and tail (lower) of Rau, which was later adapted and modified to the Story of Osar (the older brother) and Set (the younger brother).The color white by the way is the color of wisdom, purity, knowledge and the honorable dead.

The Kamitic/Kemetic peoples’ close observations of nature made them also observe what occurred within their being. It was understood that just like there was a KAMTA and TASETT that existed physically, KAMTA and TASETT also existed spiritually within man and woman. A man or woman that was peaceful, prosperous, righteous, truthful living, God fearing, fertile, disciplined, etc. was viewed as being influenced by KAMTA and associated with the “individual” called Osar. A man or woman that was untruthful, disrespectful of God, impotent/infertile, lacked self-discipline, a warmonger, rash, impoverished, etc. was said to be influenced by TASETT as was associated with the energy Set.

According to history one of the first Kamitic/Kemetic individuals associated with Osar was the first dynasty ruler named King Menes/Narmer. It is not known who was the first individual to become associated with Set, what is known is that Set later became Set-an and finally the Christian Satan. Because King Menes/Narmer was a physical, living human being, it disputes the popular claim that the Kamitic/Kemetic people worshipped gods and goddesses. A thorough analysis of their culture and the grand edifices that continue to stand that are actually memorials.  Reveals that what Egyptologists call gods and goddesses are actually categories for particular ancestral spirit. In other words, King Menes/Narmer became associated with Osar, which the reader will recall is associated with KAMTA (mystery, stability, strength, prosperity, peace, etc.) because he unified the country in the most peaceful way that he possibly could thus bringing prosperity. He was therefore revered as an ancestor, meaning Osar and all of the other so-called gods and goddesses of Egypt are actually guardian spirits. This is the reason why throughout Kamit/Kemet there are images of these spirits guiding and performing tasks like any other angelic being.  When we compare this to other African traditions with similar cultural practices and observe how it exists in contemporary times, it becomes clear what is Kamitic/Kemetic spirituality.

The Origin of the Amun Ra Religion

The real Ra or Rau within which corresponds to the Holy Spirit and Power of God, is all knowing, omnipotent and omnipresent because it is what is called in Western psychology the super conscious, the collective unconscious or God. It is a mystery, which is why the Kamitic people associated it with KAMTA.  The subconscious, which is the part of our being that corresponds to our personal memories, habits, etc. they associated it with TASETT.  It must be remembered that KAMTA and TASETT are also called the Upper Kamit and Lower Kamit, psychologically speaking what is termed today as Higher Self and the Lower Self.

Psychologists will tell you that the superconscious and the subconscious work together. Deep, intuitive messages come from the superconscious and are received in our subconscious as inspiring thoughts and actions. This is why the Kamitic/Kemetic people understanding the connection between the subconscious and superconscious, likened with the unification of KAMTA and TASETT. This is classic ancient African thinking that from the spiritual comes the physical, from the unseen comes the seen, the head to the tail, from the feminine principle comes the masculine principle, from the invisible comes the visible in order for there to be life, and so on, is all symbolized as the unification of KAMTA and TASETT.  The way to engage the superconscious and subconscious together is through conscious effort, which is how Khepera, Ra, Ra Atum and Amun Ra come into the picture, because they all correspond to our conscious mind, the rationalizing aspect of our being, which is our Soul.  When our Soul is at the Ra and Ra Atum moments we have difficulties because are attention is focused on the physical, the material, the things of the world, the limitations that exist in TASETT. When our Soul is at the Amun Ra and Khepera moments we are in the most receptive states and are able to receive guidance from the Rau. This is because our attention is focused on the whole perspective (spiritual/physical) and is opened to the endless possibilities that exist in KAMTA. The night sky is the limit or NO LIMIT.

What this means is that the Kamitic/Kemetic Way of Life in simple terms is all about listening and being receptive to the Rau – the Holy Spirit of God and the emissaries of the Rau, which are our aakhu (ancestors) and netcharu (guardian spirits).  When you are receptive to the Rau, the Rau (remember, being all knowing, omnipotent and omnipresent) will show you how to accomplish any and all of your objectives in life. If you have ever went to sleep with some thing on your mind and awoke with an answer, that answer came from the Rau – the Divine Spirit of God within our being that is connected to every living thing on the planet. Have you ever had a dream and in the dream you saw a deceased relative tell you something or your awoke from your dream with new insight on how to accomplish something, because you saw the deceased relative? This was your aakhu (ancestor) interceding on your behalf or delivering a message from the Rau. It is that simple and if you trust in the Rau the Rau will show you how to achieve any objective. If you state what you want to the Rau, the Rau will deliver it to you, which is why Jesus called the Rau – the Power and Spirit of God, the Comforter.

The Kamitic/Kemetic people understood this and this is why they categorized their ancestral spirits the way they did.  It was by observing nature they began to see a pattern and they recognized that when they said something that they didn’t really want it corresponded to Npu (Anpu, Sobek, Sebek, Anubis). Hence, the saying, be careful what you ask for you just might get it, but when they said something that they wanted. The Rau would provide them with an Npu guardian spirit that would help them to get what they want ethically, morally and without harming others. They understood who and what the Rau is and they knew, what prevents most people from achieving true happiness, peace, wealth, health, etc. is their ability to follow the Rau due to their fears, inhibitions, and past experiences.  All of these inhibitions correspond to TASETT or what older African Americans would call the blues or negative spirits the Kamitic/Kemetic people called aapepu influenced by Set. People want to debate if spirits are real or not.  If you want to know if a negative spirit is real all you have to do is say that you are going to do something positive and I guarantee you, you will have a bunch of energies/forces that will try to stop you. So to remind people that they are made in the image of God and that they are the controllers of their destiny, they built their civilization around the maa aankh.

Understand, at present besides the ankh or aankh symbol (which symbolizes the rebirth of one’s conscious or being “Born Again” there are no artifacts that have been found suggesting that the Kamitic/Kemetic people had a maa aankh, but do you know what?  There probably never will be a diagram found, because as stated before the Kamitic/Kemetic people lived it and like the Kongo-Bantu people their society revolved around it.  For those who need more proof, simply study the Kamitic culture and you will find that it corresponds to the various moments and philosophy.  As to why the maa aankh exists today it is because I asked the Rau – The Spirit for a tool to help me improve my life, because I was in dire need.  After benefiting from it, I was given the task to share it with others because our families, community and society are also in bad shape.  Simply put, God and our ancestors needs individuals who aren’t afraid to stand for truth and invoke (or conjure) the power of God on point to give people encouragement, inspiration and power to take back their life from Set and the aapepu.

KAMTA is a different form of spirituality because it approaches the Kamitic/Kemetic way from an oppressed person’s perspective, like the hero Hru fighting to reclaim, attain and maintain his or her heritage.  This unique perspective can not be learned by solely by books. It requires that one take a walk on the other side – KAMTA – in order get a full picture or holistic view of life.  This is why the basic mission of KAMTA is to help people with their everyday trials and tribulations by invoking the power of Nebertcher in their life.

Who or What are the Ancient Egyptian Gods?

Who or what are the netcharu? Well, let me first tell you that the first time I wrote about the neteru, netjeru or netcharu, it was based mostly upon scholarly research and theory. I had a little brush or experience with these divinities but no real relationship with them. I was just very zealous and like most, I was just happy and wanted to get the information out there about the Kamitic tradition.

Ok, for those of you that haven’t heard, I underwent a serious change in the past few years. I was gravely ill and almost died on two occasions (three is the charm number signifying that you better make some changes or else). I basically survived because I had to for a lack of a better term, “Sho’ N Prove” by putting what I had learned into action.  I had no get serious and find out quickly what worked for me.   I had to get down with some real juju, real fast and with no one in the so-called “spiritual” mindset to help me. I really had to do some things.  Meditation wasn’t getting it…no fluffy bunny stuff for me.  I had to get seriously FUNKY! It was through this experience I made a very interesting discovery.

The one thing that I learned was that the roots of the Kamitic tradition is essentially ancient African shamanism. This was interesting for two reasons: The first reason is because it dispels the myth that the Kamitic people had a pan-religion, meaning they believed in the same thing, worshiped the same way, etc. as often depicted and described by most authors, books, movies, etc.  In other words, everyone did not belong to the same priesthood or tradition because there were various traditions that existed and many of these traditions differed per geographical region.The one thing that the Kamitic people did have in common is that they universally believed in the existence of one God, whom they referred to as Nebertcher – “The Lord of Everything”.

The second thing that made understanding that the roots of the Kamitic religion is essentially African shamanism interesting was that like most African religions and traditions, the belief in ancestors was very strong. This meant that there was a unique relationship that the living had with their dead. It should be noted that most of the grand edifices of Kamit are actually memorials dedicated to their ancestors.

Now, when I was laying up on the hospital gurney, it was my ancestors that helped me to change my perspective about the neteru, which I was informed to call netcharu (such as in nature).  The generic word for God is Neter or Netchur, which is why people commonly refer to natural events as Nature. The energies/spirits controlling those events the Kamau called the netcharu.

The netcharu I was informed were similar to the other divinities but they were basically deified ancestor spirits, similar to the Basimbi of the Kongo. I was shown this because like I said, I was literally on a death bed and when you are close to death you see things completely different and not from an intellectual perspective, because you’re not concerned with what’s right or wrong. You’re only concerned with “What WORKS” when you’re on a deathbed. And, I am not saying that anyone is right or wrong.  I am just telling you what I saw and what helped me to escape Death’s grasp.  So, I was informed that there are a number of netcharu that are similar to the Yoruba orishsa (but for me they weren’t the same) that exists but the main ones and their Christian/Roman Catholic(1) correspondences are:

First there is only One God. The common name for the Supreme Being is Nebertcher – “Lord of All”. Under Nebertcher there is:

  • Osar (Asar, Ausar, Osiris) the Lord of the Dead is the guardian spirit of peace, wisdom, purity, knowledge and fertility. Associated with the Resurrected Jesus and La Virgin de las Mercedes.
  • Oset (Aset, Ast, Auset, Isis) the Mother of Revolution is the guardian spirit of positive change and motherhood. Associated with the Virgin Mary, Virgin de la Regla and Virgen of the Miraculous Medals.
  • Hru (Hra, Heru, Horus) the Heir of Osar is the guardian spirit of victory, success and triumph. Associated with Samson, King David and St. Barbara.
  • Djahuti (Tahuti, Tehuti, Thoth) the Lord of Change is the guardian spirit of divination. Associated with King Solomon and St. Francis of Assisi.
  • Nebhet (Nephtys) Lady of the House is the guardian spirit love, beauty, pleasure, money and peace. Associated with Mary Magdalene and La Virgin de la Caridad del Cobre.
  • Sokar (Sokher, Seker) Lord of the Cemetery is the guardian spirit of resurrection, renewal and illness. Associated with Lazarus.
  • Npu (Anpu, Enpu, Anubis) the Messenger/Traveler between the Living and Dead, is the guardian spirit of guidance. The master of the cross-road.  Associated with the Moses and El Nino de la Atocha.
  • Maat the Gatekeeper of Life/Death is the guardian spirit of balance, righteousness and sanity. Associated with Joshua and St. Norbert.
  • Hruaakhuti (Ra-Hor-kahuti, Bedhuty, Herukhuti) Lord of the Double Horizon, is the guardian spirit of justice. Associated with the disciple Peter and St. George the Destroyer of Dragons.

The Kamitic devil (sort of speak) is called Set.  Set is the spirit of War, chaos, destruction, confusion, imbalance. You name it. He has his hand in it, which is why he later became Set-an and Satan in the Christian tradition.  It is too bad that the early Christians didn’t completely understand the Kamitic tradition and just changed the names while copying it word for word. If they had, they would have caught that Set, the red one who is King of the North, is the spirit of sensory overload, excess, chaos, destruction, etc. So, when it comes time for Christmas (Winter Solstice Dec. 21-25) they would be cautious of the jolly Red Man (spirit) in disguise that makes this season for many – the worst time of the year, due to burglary, depression, homicide and suicide.

The netcharu I was shown are the eldest and earliest of our benevolent ancestors. They are very high up, so high that they are considered the founders of clans and tribes. Like true essences, it is impossible to truly possess them because it is like possessing the sun in the palm of one’s hand. The closest that we can come to possessing them, is possessing an ancestor that worked with this spirit.  And, when I say worked with this spirit, I mean possessing an ancestor that has encountered or dealt with this spirit because they were a priest, priestess or some how a devotee of that particular energy/spirit. In our ancestors’ times, a priest, priestess or devotee of a particular spirit, was one that had to learn how to work with a energy/spirit in order to overcome a trial, tribulation, etc. The energy/spirit taught them in their dreams, visions, hunches, etc. how to achieve certain goals provided they do certain things for the spirit. This same relationship exists in the Black Church today even though it is masked with rituals like sacrament, baptism and offering.

There were a lot of things that I was shown as I lay on the gurney listening to the numerous patients cry out to Death to take them from their misery.  One of the things that I learned was that, it is said that when we physically die, our ancestors (usually a familiar one) comes to us after our soul leaves the body and assists us on the other side. This I believe to be true because I was visited by a group of spirits. It was through this experience that made me conclude that the Kamau (Ancient Africans of Egypt) used animal parts and so forth to illustrate the functions and responsibilities of these numerous spirits or entities that exist around us all.   What this means is that we all have an Npu spirit – that is a spirit (or group of spirits) that guides us provide us with direction and so forth. We all have Djahuti, Hru and Hruaakhuti spirits and they are not just imaginary, archetypical beings. They were physically real, living people, with real feelings, beliefs, etc. and are real spirits with real power and guess what real taboos.  This is why they are still fond of the things of the earth or physical things. It should be noted that while we all have netcharu no two spirits are alike. Meaning, one individual’s Npu might favor pipe tobacco, while another prefers cigars.  Although, they may have different characteristics, they will both have the same purpose, which is to assist, guide and help one find their Way.

Who and what are the netcharu? They are guardian angels but not in the thinking that most people believe in the west. You see, most people in the west are under the influence that our guardian angels only appear to steer us away from harm. They completely miss the point in the Bible that when Adam and Eve were cast out of the Garden of Eden, a great guardian (the archangel Jophiel) with a fiery sword was put at the entrance. Most interpret this to mean that God placed the archangel at the entrance to keep man and woman from ever returning to the Garden of Eden.  God is not that cruel.  It is my belief that God placed the archangel there to protect the Tree of Life. In others words to prevent the unrighteous from using that was so sacred wrongfully.

This is what the netcharu do, sure they steer us away from harms way but their main objective/purpose is to protect and guard the sacredness of the Spirit. How do you know when you have offended one of them and have crossed over to the Red Zone ruled by Set? Oh, everything goes wrong, you feel burned, you have nothing but problems everywhere you turn, etc., etc., etc.  Everything is out of whack! There is imbalance everywhere it seems and no peace. How do you keep from offending the netcharu? You work with your ancestors, since the netcharu have been gone for such a long time and forget how physical life can be, who help teach you the taboos as it relates to the Spirit.

1. Many will question why I included the Christian and Roman Catholic syncretism.  The reason is because there are different spiritual technologies at work. Living in the West, many of us have become accustomed to “plug and play” spiritual work based upon our intellect. This eventually leads to becoming a culture vulture, an individual that adopts the cultural ways of others without having any true understanding of the content behind the form. Since most of us have had some dealings with Christianity and/or Roman Catholicism, our spirits will be familiar with these icons. It is through these icons they can help us to understand our ancient ancestral masks.
