What is the Kamitic/Kemetic Way of Life?

I have answered this question numerous times. In the beginning, I use to give a real lengthy discourse, but I am older and much wiser, and I hope this short post answers the question for you.  Now, there is a lot that has been written about the Kamitic/Kemetic Way of Life because the Kamitic/Kemetic people and their society mean a lot of things to different people. The Kamitic/Kemetic Way of Life to me is based upon my early experiences.

You see, when I first began learning about Kamit/Kemet, I am not going to lie; I was amazed and just fascinated by all of the metaphysical principles. So much so, that I really tried to apply them to my life. What ended up happening was that I found myself participating in various study groups and attending numerous lectures where I saw the same people all the time. At the same time because my ideas and beliefs were considered so radical from my family and peers, I was somewhat ostracized. Things got a whole lot worse before they got better, but to make a long story short, looking back at all that I experienced I basically was a “metaphysical/spiritual groupie”.

For the longest time I couldn’t understand what was going wrong. I mean I read, studied my lessons, and I tried as best I could to eat right, but I just was not growing.  I felt spiritually impotent even though my personal library consisted of over 250 books at such a young age.

I didn’t know it at the time but the reason I was not growing was because I just had like Hru, the red Deshret crown. This crown corresponds to TASETT the Red Lands, which symbolizes the physical realm and lower self. It also corresponds to the Right Solar Eye, which is based solely upon what we have learned from our family, friends (and enemies), community, etc. All of our factual information and everything we have learned about our environment, including our beliefs and ideas are associated with this crown.

Then that’s when I met my padrino (spiritual godfather), an old black Cuban man who taught me a lot of wonderful things and helped me to understand our cultural heritage by introducing me African cosmology. Papa was an Omo Ellegua (Child of the orisha/guardian angel Ellegua), so it made sense that he magically would appear in my life like Shug Avery appeared to Celie in The Color Purple. There were a lot of things that Papa taught me but when he learned that I was reading and studying about the Kamitic/Kemetic tradition and trying to implement it into my life.  Boy he scolded me big time (laugh) and told me that it was silly to try and replicate what was done thousands of years ago, because what the Ancient Egyptians faced back then is completely different from the issues we have today. He told me instead that I should focus upon understanding the concepts and principles because the concepts and principles have a common ancestry. Then shortly after that, like Shug he disappeared only to briefly reappear to check on my progress, similar to the Kamitic/Kemetic Npu, Ellegua guides the dead because I was truly lost.

At the time I didn’t really understand what Papa meant by what he had said but as the years went by it began to make more and more sense. It was like learning to speak Latin, it is a great language for referencing purposes but no one speaks Latin because it is for the most part a dead-language. Basically, everything that I had read and learned about the Kamitic/Kemetic way was good but it gave me only a one-sided perspective, a real linear, black-white viewpoint (un-holistic). This is why in the Story of Osar, Set is said to have gouged out Hru’s eye, meaning he gave Hru a limited view of things. Well, when I finally began to follow Papa’s advice, that’s when I began to get the white Hedjet crown in regards to spirituality.

The white Hedjet crown corresponds to KAMTA, the Black Lands, which symbolizes the spiritual realm and our higher self.

KAMTA - The Black Lands. Literally also known as the fertile region of Upper Kamit in the southern part of the country. Metaphorically, it symbolizes our Higher Self.

The spiritual realm is accessible through nonphysical or spiritual means such as by using our intuition represented as the Left Utchat or the Lunar Eye.

 This is when I got a better view, a holistic view because I was introduced to my ancestors.

It was through my ancestors in regards to this subject matter that I acquired the double white and red Pschent crown,
which symbolizes the union of both the physical and spiritual realities, holistic view and the uniting of the higher and lower selves.

And, it was through my ancestors that I discovered the Maa Aankh, which helped me to realize that life is all about cycles.
We succeed, evolve and grow when we make a complete 360 degree revolution around the spiritual and physical realms like the sun.

So, what is the Kamitic/Kemetic Way of Life About?

It is about surrendering your will to your Higher Self or Spirit within so that it can lead and help you to enjoy life. Period.

Why is KAMTA (Kamitic/Kemetic Shamanism and the Maa Aankh Kamitic/Kemetic Cosmogram), so Important to Me?

I was recently asked why is KAMTA and the maa aankh so important to me?  It was a loaded question.

So, I began by stating that it was Brother Arthur Flower’s Hoodooway list (which I had the honor and priviliege of participating on) and the Orb of Djenra blog that first brought to my attention that although early African Americans weren’t able to preserve a large portion of their religious culture as their kin had done in the Caribbean and Latin America. Early African Americans did manage to preserve a great deal of it through dances, folk practices, proverbs, songs and history.  It was through these various cultural practices that early African Americans were able to preserve their cultural way by passing on traditions, which became the basis of African American shaman tradition known today as Hoodoo or Rootwork, as it was called in the northern states where I am from.

Contrary to popular belief, Hoodoo/Rootwork has never been all about casting spells for ill, doing magical work and making pacts with the devil.  This is all sensational nonsense that was created years ago by racist individuals and promoted through a stereotypical media that took advantage of the public’s ignorance about people of African descent.  Unknown to most Hoodoo/Rootwork is an African American folk practice that was created by African Christians during slavery. Like most folk practices such as the European folk practice of reading of the Psalms, praying and saying grace before a meal, the use of sacred objects like blessed oil, blessed water, the Holy Bible and so on.  Hoodoo/Rootwork in employed to obtain spiritual and often divine remedies for material and physical ailments such as problems with money, obtaining love, protection from evil and so on.  Hoodoo/Rootwork as you can see is very similar to European folk practices.  The only difference between the two is that the African American folk practice was created and used by African slaves in order to fight, resist and struggle against the cruelties of slavery.

It was through this folk tradition that the shamanistic practices brought from Africa were able to survive the tragic slave experience and contribute greatly to African American spirituality. As a result, early African Americans were able to continue to mark very important events that occurred in his or her life through a spiritual blueprint or cosmogram called the Kongo Cross.

As I mention in MAA AANKH Vol. 1, I first learned of the Kongo Cross through my deceased grandparents. One day while contemplating how to do something that I remembered my grandparents use to do.  Shortly after, my attention was drawn to my grandmother’s obituary notice and there it listed her birthday and the day she died, but most African Americans have a strong ingrained cultural taboo against saying death or that someone died, especially when the individual was a godly-minded individual. Instead most African Americans say that the person “passed” or “passed away”, because although physically they do not exist something within our psyche knows that their soul continues to exist. On my grandmother’s obituary instead of saying like I have seen on other cultures obituary birth and death date, it stated Sunrise and Sunset.

This was amazing to me because I had, had this obituary for the longest time and looked at it numerous times and never saw that.  I could’ve called it mere coincidence that I was thinking about doing something that drew my attention to look at my grandmother’s obituary notice. I could if I was arrogant, naïve and didn’t believe in spiritual (invisible, non-material) intercession, but I do, which is how I “humbly” came to realize that ancestral spirits do exist. It was proof that the righteous souls do continue to exist and do not die. In other words, there is “life after death”; these ancestral beings just continually to exist as spirits.

This is how I truly learned about the Kongo Cross and came to really understand African American spirituality. It was this understanding that led me to see that the Kongo Cosmogram besides marking one’s birthday and their death.  Also signified other important events like the initiation into African American fraternities and sororities, as well as significant spiritual events like the day an individual was baptized, came to God or converted to their chosen religious faith.   It was all a reminder of one of the things older African Americans were known for saying, which is, “That we all have to go through something, in order to get something.” This something I later discovered as I analyzed my life helped me to see that life is all about the choices that we make.  It made me realize that many of our choices are ill-informed choices and unwise decisions. Some of us continue to keep making these same choices, which lead us into the same unproductive relationships, same unwise money purchases, etc. All because someone never told us that this is our life and it is up to us to make the best out of it. This means that just like everything else we have to learn how to make better decisions, which means learn from the past (your past and the past of others-ancestors-history).

This is one of the most valuable lessons that I learned from the Kongo Cross, which led to the creation of the maa aankh, a cosmogram inspired by the Kongo Cross but based upon the Kamitic/Kemetic (Ancient Egyptian) concepts and principles.  It was through the maa aankh it became apparent that when we learn from our mistakes, face our fears, and overcome our faults, that our spiritual talents are activated. This is our initiation system where we become great healers, musicians, entertainers, speakers, politicians, etc. There are countless stories of African Americans that have had this spiritual awakening.  This is why most grown people don’t particular care for teen boppers singing about love because deep down we know that this 15 to 24 years old doesn’t have any real experience with the subject matter. The older folks use to say, “They don’t have any SOUL”. Before then, it was called in our churches ANOINTING.

When you have ANOINTING, it is truly a powerful, cultural experience that can’t be explained in words because it is a mystical connection between you and the Divine.  It is similar to an assurance that everything is going to work out but it is also a pledge that you have to do your part.

It is for these reasons I can truly say that the maa aankh is not a New Age, magical circle creation based upon syncretic beliefs with sacred technology.  It is truly an initiation system that has been handed down to us from the first Africans brought to North America. The early African Americans just never called it an initiation/spiritual system or “religion” because like most indigenous people.  They didn’t regard their spiritual beliefs and practices as a “religion” in the way religion is viewed today as a set of beliefs and practices only performed one or a couple of days out of the week.  No, their spiritual beliefs and practices were an integral and seamless part of their way of life.  It is this understanding of the maa aankh that makes it so special to me, because it helped me to move beyond intellectualizing about being religious and spiritual, to actually Being

It is from this understanding that I have been informed to refer to this African American cross-spiritual practice as Kamitic/Kemetic shamanism because it offers various forms of healing including giving one a sense of purpose and access to forgotten knowledge (traditions). This is accomplished by entering into an altered mind state or a meditative/mediumistic state of mind, similar to dreaming, except one obtains information and power that can help them in their physical life. It works because it has always been a part of the plan for us to seek and connect with the Divine within our being in order to succeed in life.

I am aware that there are other Kamitic/Kemetic initiation systems that exist and I applaud the creators and founders of those systems, because they assisted me in realizing my divinity, as well. But the maa aankh is truly dear to me for several reasons.  The first is because it was derived from my most recent ancestors (my grandparents and great grandparents).  Second, since the maa aankh was derived from the Kongo Cross, which was created by the Kongo-Angolan people, a Bantu ethnic group, through it I was able to get a glimpse of my ancestral past. Last but not least, since the maa aankh also helped me to stretch back into time and get a glimpse of my Bantu ancestral memories, I was able to imagine and thus reconnect to those Bantu people that walked alongside the Nile River.  There simply is no greater joy than being able to reconnect to the Divine through your ancestral, cultural heritage, because once that connection is made there are unlimited possibilities as to how it can be expressed.  Another great advantage is that suddenly your small, limitless world all of sudden expands as you sense the cultural connection between you and others. Everything takes on a new meaning not because you intellectualize it but, because you see the spiritual significance of it. Like Capoeira before I saw it as a beautiful Afro-Brazilian art, but after my experience I see it as totally integral with my way of life.  When I do play in a a roda, I found myself easily going into the au (cartwheel) to access power or axe’ (ashe) from below (within, from the ancestors, etc. however you want to look at it).  Dancing rather it be to Mary Mary’s God in Me, Machel Montano’s Too Young to Soca, Bob Marley’s Soul Shake Down Party, Holwin Wolf Smokestack Lightnin to Celena Gonzalez’ Santa Barbara or Bamboleo’s Tecapacita.  It all has new meaning because even dancing helps to propel into the mystical realm some refer to as Zen.   It is all part of the awakening experience where one is blessed, and his or her talents are awakened, as they feel the Spirit, hence ANOINTING.

Simply put, it is a spiritual system that acknowledges our divinity because it is based upon our biological and cultural identity/self.

How To Make the Transition to Kamitic/Kemetic Spirituality?

Peace Family. Sorry I have been gone for a minute but we’re back.

In recent years there has been a lot of information that has surfaced on the net about Kamitic/Kemetic spirituality, Jesus and the Council of Nicea. So much so, truth seekers are at odds with each other and/or confused as to where they want to go. Zealous truth seekers are so excited about what they have learned, that they are ready to intellectual “blaze” anyone even their own grandma, which is understandable but it is wrong because you’re doing yourself and others who could benefit from your growth spiritually a disservice.  So, to prevent this Kamitic/Kemetic spirituality thing from being turned into a new fundamentalist movement, I was inspired using my experience to set give some pointers on how to make the transition, before going out and as Bob Marley says, “Catch a fire” on everyone and everything.

1.    It must be understood that the reason why you know what you know is because at this point in your growth (evolution) , the religion in question has not or is not serving you like it should be. There’s a snag that has caused a major rift or tear in your belief system, your paradigm and this is why you are here reading this today. This is the reason why you have learned what you have learned and are questioning everything in regards to the religion you were reared in.

2.    It must be understood that everyone has not experienced the same thing you have experienced. I tried to get saved in order to escape the violence in Detroit due to the crack epidemic and the Holy Ghost as it was taught in my church didn’t work for me. That’s not to say that it or Christianity didn’t work at all for anybody. It just didn’t serve me or help me at that particular time.  For someone else, it may be helping them and improving their life, so there is no need to try and convince them of anything otherwise.  It would be a serious violation and taboo for me to try and get my family to see things from my perspective.  If they ask I can try to explain in the simplest way possible but, othr than that nothing else is given because they didn’t and haven’t walked in my shoes, and therefore don’t understand the path.   Why is this so important? It is important because if you haven’t learned already you soon will years later, that it is a serious waste of breath, time and energy to try to convince others about the hidden truths of Christianity. You can argue until the cows come home scriptures and theories but you can’t argue experience because no one can take that away from you.  So, don’t’ throw you ).Jpearls to the swine (sorry for the swine reference

3.     With that understood, the question is now where do we go from here? To keep you from wandering all over the place from faith to faith, religion to religion. You have to understand what it is that you are looking for or what is it that you want, which is why the first two pointers are very important. The reason you’re in search or questioning things is because something was broke and you’re trying to fix it.  The spiritual pipeline had a serious leak because it was not reflecting your divinity. This is the true purpose of religion as true practitioners will tell you, that the purpose of religion is to tie you back to the Creator, but what does that really mean? It means that if you are made in the image of God, then you have the divine potential to accomplish anything in your life and solve any problem that you have as well. You just have to discover how to do it, so your religious foundation should begin with this first and foremost.  If the spirituality you deal with doesn’t begin or support this, most likely it is man-driven (political, financial, etc.) …can we say “Jim Jones”.

It is very important that these three pointers be understood that spiritual development is a form of healing.  A lot of people I have encountered didn’t understand this and this is why they (myself included at the time) was so confused about the whole spirituality thing. I know when I first embarked upon this path I was thoroughly confused. In fact, I was upset about Christianity for a long time, until I learned that it wasn’t the early Christians (Coptics, Gnostics, etc.) who messed things up.  It was men (Council of Nicea, Southern racists, and other politically motivated individuals, etc.) that screwed it up for so many.  And, if we don’t understand this we will throw the baby out with the bathwater and end up perpetuating the very behavior we despise or simply adopting someone else’s cultural perspective and neglecting our own.

Is Your Victory in Your Peace?

Have you ever heard the saying that your victory is in your peace? When I was growing up the older people in the church use to sing this song called Victory Shall be Mine, which went as follows:

Victory, victory shall be mine.
Victory, victory shall be mine.
If I hold my peace, let the Lord fight my battles.
Victory, victory shall be mine.

For the longest time I didn’t understand what they meant by this because to hold your tongue, not fight for yourself, etc. was seen as a sign of weakness, softness or simply just being a punk; and, of course, if you’re a punk you get beat down.  I also thought this was about not being able to defend yourself.

It wasn’t until I learned about the maa aankh and compared it with the story or Legend of Osar (Ausar, Asar or Osiris).  According to legend, king Osar was responsible for bringing peace, prosperity and order to the Kamitic/Kemetic people. He was loved by everyone until his envious brother Set (Set-an or Satan) murdered him and usurped the throne. Thanks to Osar’s devoted wife, an heir to the throne was conceived named Hru (Heru, Hrw or Horus) who challenged Set when he came of age. Now for a period of time, when the two engaged in battle, it usually ended in stalemate because Set was more conniving; after all he is the author of chaos, confusion and master of war. It wasn’t until Hru who had a gouged out eye repaired so that he could see clearly, and allow the deceased Osar to intercede on his behalf, that Hru was able to finally defeat Set and win the war.  After doing so, he was awarded the double crown called the Pschent.

Set’s color is the color red, which according to ancient African symbolism is the color of life, mediation, fire, aggression and masculinity, which is why the Kamitic/Kemetic people called the northern region of their country, Lower Kamit/Kemet, TASETT (The Red Lands), symbolized by the red crown they called the Deshret. Basically, it is what our elders use to call a “hot head”.

The southern region of the country further into the interior of Africa, the Kamitic or Kemetic people called it Upper Kamit/Kemet or KAMTA (The Black Lands) but they symbolized the dark fertile grounds of their country with a white crown they called the Hedjet. The color white in the ancient African mystery systems symbolizes purity, cleanliness (hence ethics and morality, thus a clean heart), knowledge, wisdom, stability, the honorable dead or the ancestors.

This means that Hru was given the double crown because he was able to keep a cool head and not allow his passion for victory to defeat him. In the Japanese martial arts systems the samurai Code of Bushido teaches and I paraphrase that a “the best warrior is the calm warrior”. In the Afro-Brazillian martial arts Capoeira mestres (masters) are forever telling young adepts not to just kick all widly but to exercise control. Even in the Hip Hop world, jokers are told that they need to “CHILL”.

I understand now that your victory is in your peace is all about exercising self-control, self-discipline and inner strength.  It is not about not defending your self but about not worrying and having any fear. This is why Set is considered evil in the Kamitic/Kemetic tradition, it is because he doesn’t exercise any self-control and simply allows his emotions (arrogance, lust, greed, jealousy, his hater mentality)  to control him.  He had a hot head and/or a hard head, which reminds me that my grandfather use to say a hard head makes a what??? Yeah, soft behind.  He also use to say, “Don’t let your mouth write a check that your butt can’t cash”, which all deals with excessive emotions or no control.

When we exercise a little control, the blessings of God (peace, wisdom, stability, etc.) manifests themselves in our life as hunches, intuitive thoughts, ideas, dreams, etc. delivered to us through our ancestors.  It is through the blessings of God that we solve our problems.

The Origin of KAMTA: Kamitic/Kemetic Shamanism

Kamitic/Kemetic spirituality or way of life means a lot of things to a lot of people because Kamit/Kemet has and always will be a source of inspiration to generations and for generations to come. For some Kamitic/Kemeitc spirituality/way of life is an initiation system that focuses upon reconnecting to Nebertcher or God in order to expand one’s consciousness.  With the sole hope of declaring before their life came to an end that they are Osar (Asar, Ausar, Osiris).  For others Kamitic/Kemetic spirituality/way of life is about recreating, reconstructing and rebuilding the Kamitic/Kemetic society of old in order to restore Maa (balance, law, order, truth, etc.) to our hell bent society.  But for the Land of Kam, Kamitic/Kemetic spirituality/way of life is all about assisting the individual to improve their daily lives through the power of God. Unlike other Kamitic/Kemetic inspired traditions that begin with the conflict between Hru (Hrw, Heru, Horus) and Set in the Story of Osar (Asar, Ausar, Osiris). The basis of the Land of Kam spiritual practice also called KAMTA (the Black Lands) centers around the pragmatic knowledge of the Kamitic/Kemetic people and their Story of Ra and Oset.

The Kamitic/Kemetic Influences from Nature

Like most stories and traditions of indigenous people, the people of Kamit/Kemet’s beginnings is heavily influenced by how they migrated to the region, acquired food, whether by hunting animals or through agriculture, and developed into a peaceful society. According to the history of the Kamitic/Kemetic people, their country was divided into two regions due to the north flowing Nile River. The southern region of Kamit/Kemet was called the Upper Kamit or KAMTA (the Black Lands), which is where the name of this practice derives from. This region because the mouth of the Nile began in the south, had fertile dark soil, which made it possible for the Kamitic/Kemetic people to have lush crops, which naturally attracted lots of wild game that could be hunted.  It was because of this rich fertile soil, the Kamitic/Kemetic people were able to develop the science of agriculture, which laid the foundation for them to become prosperous. The Kamitic/Kemetic people didn’t know how or why the Nile flowed from the south to the north (it was a mystery) but by observing the stars and the planets, they were able to mark when the Nile would flood, this eventually is what led to the people creating the calendar.

The northern region of Kamit/Kemet that opened up to the Mediterranean was called Lower Kamit or TASETT (the Red Lands).  This was because this region for the most part was very arid and the terrain was difficult to work.  The lack of fertile soil made this what is imagined to be a very windy region that has the ability to dry one’s eyes, hence the origin of the Evil Eye. This coupled with the fact that nomadic warring tribes it appears fought constantly in this northern region for resources led to TASETT for the most part being seen as a harsh desert section of the country.

So you see it was from this astute observation of nature, the southern region known as KAMTA called Upper Kamit was equated with fertility, prosperity, abundance, peace, blessings, stability, strength, water, night sky (heavens), mystery, the south, etc. While TASETT was associated with infertility, impotence, poverty, limitation, war, chaos, violence, fire, weakness, physical land, the north, etc. It wouldn’t be long afterwards that these influences would eventually be grafted into legends, myths and stories used to validate cultural practices. As time moved on it became general knowledge amongst the Kamitic/Kemetic people of the dyadic relationship that existed between the two regions. It was simple; it was always KAMTA/TASETT, mystery/known, secret/unveiled, invisible/visible, spirit/physical, dead/living, dark/light and night/day.  The reader will note that this would appear to be a contradiction because you may have heard that Set was the devil and Hru was associated with the day.  A thorough analysis of the Kamitic/Kemetic legends will reveal that this was not the case originally.  Originally Set was good but eventually usurped by Hru who became associated with light and day and Set became associated with evil. Early Christians copied this word for word, which is why the devil in Christian lore was associated with being a good angel before being kicked out of heaven. Set still carries some of his old names as being the Lord of Light. Returning back to our subject, one of those stories that are often overlooked is the Story of Ra and Oset.

The Story of Ra and Oset begins with Oset wanting Ra’s power so that she could become a divine being. She believed that if she could discover Ra’s real name, which he kept secret she could gain control over him and become as great as he.  Through magical means Oset created a serpent and laid it upon Ra’s path so that when he came across it, the serpent would strike him and make him ill. When the poison of the serpent caused Ra’s skin to boil with fever and his bones to shake. Ra states that he has a multitude of names and a multitude of forms”. As Ra grows weaker and Oset persists to ask him to give her his real name, Ra states all of the things that he has created and that he is Khepera in the morning, Ra at noon and Tmu (or Atum) in the evening. Finally, having no other choice, Ra secretly revealed his real name to Oset so that it would be hidden to others. He does so by transferring his name from his body to hers, thus revealing that Ra dwells within. Then the story ends with the impression that Ra’s real name had, not been revealed.

In order to fully understand the story one has to have an understanding of the Kamitic/Kemetic language and philosophy. When Ra states that he has a multitude of names and a multitude of forms, it indicates that Ra is not the God or the Supreme Being as Egyptologists have claimed, but an attribute, part or section of the God. When Ra states all of the things that he has created and responds that he is Khepera in the morning, Ra at noon and Tmu (or Atum) in the evening. He reveals that he is not the sun but that his name is associated with the moments of the sun.  In other words, his real name is what gives him purpose and declares what he is supposed to do. Finally having no choice and forced to give in to Oset wishes, when he reveals his real name to Oset he does so in secret by transferring his real name from his body to hers. We learn that the real name of Ra or the real Ra resides within. The real name of Ra is secret, hidden and is called Amun Ra, which means Hidden or Concealed Ra. The real Ra that Ra transfers from his body to the body of Oset derived from the Kamitic/Kemetic word “ra” meaning energy, power, strength, etc. It is the Kamitic equivalent of the Semitic “el” which means the same thing and is used the same way as prefix and suffix to various words. The real Ra that dwells within is the life force, the Holy Ghost, the Power or the Spirit of God that exists everywhere and in everything.

When all of this is taken into consideration, compared with other traditional African systems – particularly the Kongo Cross – and put together according to the moments of the sun: Khepera is marked by the rising sun (sunrise), Ra by midday sun (noon), Ra Atum by the evening sun (sunset) and Amun Ra by midnight. Together these four moments of Ra graphically create the cosmogram called the maa aankh.  To the trained eye or the one who was biologically or culturally akin to the Kamitic/Kemetic people generally speaking Khepera is birth, Ra is life, Ra Atum is death and Amun Ra is rebirth. This is why activities pertaining to life in Kamit/Kemet were associated with Khepera, the rising sun and the east, which is where the practice of facing east derived from.It was originally done to initiate or stimulate rebirth.  Today African American hymns still make reference to the east, just listen to the Winans song Tomorrow or Anita Baker and the Winans song Ain’t No Need to Worry. An analysis of the Kamiti/Kemetic culture will also reveal that activities associated with Ra Atum, the setting sun, and the west, were also associated with death, and so on.

As you can see, the Kamitic/Kemetic people were a very ingenious group of people that tried as best they could to protect their country from foreign invaders from the north, which they associated with the color red, that the reader will recall was associated with the younger brother Set, Lower Kamit and TASETT. The two lands of Kamit/Kemet are likened to the head (upper) and tail (lower) of Rau, which was later adapted and modified to the Story of Osar (the older brother) and Set (the younger brother).The color white by the way is the color of wisdom, purity, knowledge and the honorable dead.

The Kamitic/Kemetic peoples’ close observations of nature made them also observe what occurred within their being. It was understood that just like there was a KAMTA and TASETT that existed physically, KAMTA and TASETT also existed spiritually within man and woman. A man or woman that was peaceful, prosperous, righteous, truthful living, God fearing, fertile, disciplined, etc. was viewed as being influenced by KAMTA and associated with the “individual” called Osar. A man or woman that was untruthful, disrespectful of God, impotent/infertile, lacked self-discipline, a warmonger, rash, impoverished, etc. was said to be influenced by TASETT as was associated with the energy Set.

According to history one of the first Kamitic/Kemetic individuals associated with Osar was the first dynasty ruler named King Menes/Narmer. It is not known who was the first individual to become associated with Set, what is known is that Set later became Set-an and finally the Christian Satan. Because King Menes/Narmer was a physical, living human being, it disputes the popular claim that the Kamitic/Kemetic people worshipped gods and goddesses. A thorough analysis of their culture and the grand edifices that continue to stand that are actually memorials.  Reveals that what Egyptologists call gods and goddesses are actually categories for particular ancestral spirit. In other words, King Menes/Narmer became associated with Osar, which the reader will recall is associated with KAMTA (mystery, stability, strength, prosperity, peace, etc.) because he unified the country in the most peaceful way that he possibly could thus bringing prosperity. He was therefore revered as an ancestor, meaning Osar and all of the other so-called gods and goddesses of Egypt are actually guardian spirits. This is the reason why throughout Kamit/Kemet there are images of these spirits guiding and performing tasks like any other angelic being.  When we compare this to other African traditions with similar cultural practices and observe how it exists in contemporary times, it becomes clear what is Kamitic/Kemetic spirituality.

The Origin of the Amun Ra Religion

The real Ra or Rau within which corresponds to the Holy Spirit and Power of God, is all knowing, omnipotent and omnipresent because it is what is called in Western psychology the super conscious, the collective unconscious or God. It is a mystery, which is why the Kamitic people associated it with KAMTA.  The subconscious, which is the part of our being that corresponds to our personal memories, habits, etc. they associated it with TASETT.  It must be remembered that KAMTA and TASETT are also called the Upper Kamit and Lower Kamit, psychologically speaking what is termed today as Higher Self and the Lower Self.

Psychologists will tell you that the superconscious and the subconscious work together. Deep, intuitive messages come from the superconscious and are received in our subconscious as inspiring thoughts and actions. This is why the Kamitic/Kemetic people understanding the connection between the subconscious and superconscious, likened with the unification of KAMTA and TASETT. This is classic ancient African thinking that from the spiritual comes the physical, from the unseen comes the seen, the head to the tail, from the feminine principle comes the masculine principle, from the invisible comes the visible in order for there to be life, and so on, is all symbolized as the unification of KAMTA and TASETT.  The way to engage the superconscious and subconscious together is through conscious effort, which is how Khepera, Ra, Ra Atum and Amun Ra come into the picture, because they all correspond to our conscious mind, the rationalizing aspect of our being, which is our Soul.  When our Soul is at the Ra and Ra Atum moments we have difficulties because are attention is focused on the physical, the material, the things of the world, the limitations that exist in TASETT. When our Soul is at the Amun Ra and Khepera moments we are in the most receptive states and are able to receive guidance from the Rau. This is because our attention is focused on the whole perspective (spiritual/physical) and is opened to the endless possibilities that exist in KAMTA. The night sky is the limit or NO LIMIT.

What this means is that the Kamitic/Kemetic Way of Life in simple terms is all about listening and being receptive to the Rau – the Holy Spirit of God and the emissaries of the Rau, which are our aakhu (ancestors) and netcharu (guardian spirits).  When you are receptive to the Rau, the Rau (remember, being all knowing, omnipotent and omnipresent) will show you how to accomplish any and all of your objectives in life. If you have ever went to sleep with some thing on your mind and awoke with an answer, that answer came from the Rau – the Divine Spirit of God within our being that is connected to every living thing on the planet. Have you ever had a dream and in the dream you saw a deceased relative tell you something or your awoke from your dream with new insight on how to accomplish something, because you saw the deceased relative? This was your aakhu (ancestor) interceding on your behalf or delivering a message from the Rau. It is that simple and if you trust in the Rau the Rau will show you how to achieve any objective. If you state what you want to the Rau, the Rau will deliver it to you, which is why Jesus called the Rau – the Power and Spirit of God, the Comforter.

The Kamitic/Kemetic people understood this and this is why they categorized their ancestral spirits the way they did.  It was by observing nature they began to see a pattern and they recognized that when they said something that they didn’t really want it corresponded to Npu (Anpu, Sobek, Sebek, Anubis). Hence, the saying, be careful what you ask for you just might get it, but when they said something that they wanted. The Rau would provide them with an Npu guardian spirit that would help them to get what they want ethically, morally and without harming others. They understood who and what the Rau is and they knew, what prevents most people from achieving true happiness, peace, wealth, health, etc. is their ability to follow the Rau due to their fears, inhibitions, and past experiences.  All of these inhibitions correspond to TASETT or what older African Americans would call the blues or negative spirits the Kamitic/Kemetic people called aapepu influenced by Set. People want to debate if spirits are real or not.  If you want to know if a negative spirit is real all you have to do is say that you are going to do something positive and I guarantee you, you will have a bunch of energies/forces that will try to stop you. So to remind people that they are made in the image of God and that they are the controllers of their destiny, they built their civilization around the maa aankh.

Understand, at present besides the ankh or aankh symbol (which symbolizes the rebirth of one’s conscious or being “Born Again” there are no artifacts that have been found suggesting that the Kamitic/Kemetic people had a maa aankh, but do you know what?  There probably never will be a diagram found, because as stated before the Kamitic/Kemetic people lived it and like the Kongo-Bantu people their society revolved around it.  For those who need more proof, simply study the Kamitic culture and you will find that it corresponds to the various moments and philosophy.  As to why the maa aankh exists today it is because I asked the Rau – The Spirit for a tool to help me improve my life, because I was in dire need.  After benefiting from it, I was given the task to share it with others because our families, community and society are also in bad shape.  Simply put, God and our ancestors needs individuals who aren’t afraid to stand for truth and invoke (or conjure) the power of God on point to give people encouragement, inspiration and power to take back their life from Set and the aapepu.

KAMTA is a different form of spirituality because it approaches the Kamitic/Kemetic way from an oppressed person’s perspective, like the hero Hru fighting to reclaim, attain and maintain his or her heritage.  This unique perspective can not be learned by solely by books. It requires that one take a walk on the other side – KAMTA – in order get a full picture or holistic view of life.  This is why the basic mission of KAMTA is to help people with their everyday trials and tribulations by invoking the power of Nebertcher in their life.

What is Kamitic/Kemetic Shamanism?

A couple of people I have spoken with online have looked at my book, website and asked what is Kamitic/Kemetic Shamanism and how did I come up with it? I couldn’t clearly actually sum it up in a few words or sentences because it was something that I just sat down one day and decided to make. It was something that was given to me and at the same time, something that I was initiated into. Let me explain.

Like so many, I had read and studied all sorts of books regarding the Kamitic/Kemetic way of life. The only difference from most is that I am the son of a preacher who was prophesied upon by numerous people that I too was going to be a preacher.  This of course is something I staunchly and stubbornly rejected, as if I was the biblical Jonah before being swallowed up by the whale.  I refused to follow in my father’s footsteps for a number of reasons; one of the main ones was because I was disgusted with Christianity and God in particular. After undergoing a few episodes of depression because I felt that God didn’t give a hoot about me, a voice spoke and inspired me to study the Ancient Egyptians in order to learn how they used the power of God to build their society. And, every since then, I read and studied about the Kamitic/Kemetic tradition with no true purpose or reason in sight.

It was after years of reading, studying and overcoming a few experiences that I met a priestess of Oshun who did a reading for me.  It was through the reading that this priestess told me that I was supposed to be a shaman.  Now, I didn’t know what a shaman was supposed to be. My idea of a shaman was a Native American medicine man or woman brewing some bubbly, smelly concoction with peyote mushrooms inside in order to induce a state of trance, like the one Wade Davis claimed to have experienced in the movie Serpent and the Rainbow when he visited the indigenous people of South America.

Naturally I didn’t want to believe what the reading had told me either but it wasn’t until the priestess convinced me to stop running from my calling and accept it; that I decided to read about shamanism.  Upon doing so, I learned that the basic understanding of shamanism is that it is a generic term that has been used throughout the world by anthropologists to describe practitioners that communicate with the spirit world in order to resolve problems that exist in the physical realm.  Michael Harner author of The Way of the Shaman gives a better understanding of what a shaman is and defines a shaman as “a man or woman who enters an altered state of consciousness, at will, to contact and utilize an ordinarily hidden reality in order to acquire knowledge, power, and to help other persons.”

When I first read this definition it took me a little while for me to truly understand what it meant. Then when I became deathly ill and had my near death experience (twice because I didn’t listen the first time) I began to get a better understanding what shamanism was all about and why the practice was needed.

As I submitted to my calling and allowed the Spirit to lead me, I was reminded of how I watched a number of preachers prepare to give their sermon.  It was randomly picked as some may think.  Many of them especially from the Pentecostal background that I had observed said a prayer to God and allowed the Spirit to guide their hands and eyes to turn to a page in the bible that the people needed to hear from. This practice is what is known as bibliomancy a form of divination.

As I submitted to my calling another thing that I was shown was that I was quite fond of certain ministers in my childhood church especially the ones that had the ability to lay hands upon individuals.

Another important aspect I saw but didn’t understand at that time was that my experience in the church gave me a unique understanding about Christianity, but my research and study gave me new type of theology. This allowed me to receive messages in my dreams, see omens and be able to explain them.

It was this experience and understanding that convinced me that the reason it was prophesized that I was supposed to be a preacher.  Is because the African American preacher is the contemporary shaman of the African American community. The reason I was inspired and instructed to read and study the Kamitic/Kemetic tradition was because the theology of our ancestral ways had been lost or temporarily misplaced due to slavery. As a result, the spirituality of many of our people lies in jeopardy, evidence of the social issues plaguing our families, community and society, as various churches compete to become the next super church for souls. It was through the intervention of my ancestors and guardian spirits that I was able to learn and establish a relationship with God that could not have been established through books.  The only purpose the books served in this whole experience was that they helped me to understand the ancient ancestral philosophy behind the experience.

It is for this reason out of respect for the traditions of old that a new general term had to be created to give some idea as to what I had experienced. That term is what I refer to as Kamitic/Kemetic shamanism.

Kamitic/Kemetic shamanism is not a reconstruction or resurrection of the old Kamitic/Kemetic kingdom and the cultural practices of ancient Egypt. It is not dedicated to reviving the old Kamitic/Kemetic religion or religious ways, nor is it a New Age appropriation with pagan and European deities. Kamitic/Kemetic shamanism simply put is an ancestral practice based upon the Afro-American cultural experience that focuses upon attaining and maintaining balance according to the Kamitic/Kemetic philosophy. It is the spiritual practice that helped me to greatly improve my life because our ancestors preserved this knowledge that they acquired as part of our legacy.





Are you Afro-Centrically, Spiritually Outcast?

Not to long ago I got a call from one of my kinfolk who like my father has been teaching/preaching in the church for a number of years. I love them dearly and they are supportive of my work because we’re family but although their intentions were good. I think I know why they were calling. They mentioned in their closing, “I want to discuss it from an apostolic perspective”.

I have been here before. I believe it is an attempt to win back my soul from my “lost pagan ways”. I haven’t consulted my ancestors on the matter yet, but the scenery looks familiar, similar to a boxing match or better yet, a mix-martial arts match with only two rounds.

The First Match

VS 

(Announcer: In the west corner…Wearing shorts that say, “Your arms too short to box with God” is the Champion with his/her bible. In the east corner…wearing red, black and green shorts, with some strange Egyptian eye on it is the Challenger. Let’s get ready to rumble…)

You see this all began when I first set out to prove that the Ancient Egyptians and other African people did not worship idols.  In the past, when I was all about being “spiritual” from an intellectual perspective, it was a showdown for real. Loved ones would come with their bible and I would come with my books and we would debate, debate and finally argue, until we got hoarse.  Both parties (intellectual fighters) argued with the sole purpose of trying to change the other’s beliefs and ideas.

(The Challenger has been knocked down but is regaining their stance just before the bell rings.  Pause…Second round begins)

Thankfully, our ancestors instilled within our family rules of conduct so that even if we didn’t agree we could agree to disagree and still love each other, but it is a showdown. They are going at it and pulling out all the stops.

(The Bell rings. Great match! Both fighters are brutally hurt. We need to go to the judges for a decision.)

In the end, when we part ways, I return to my corner feeling confident that “I showed them” thinking I beat them in this intellectual battle of the minds. Then when I looked over my shoulders, I noticed that they went back to their respective corner as well, but all of my family was there with them. As they looked over their shoulders at me, I realized that no matter what I said, all of the facts that were shown, etc.  My family viewed me as the weird one, the outcast or the sheep that had gone astray. Cousins would talk to me but at an arms’ length as if that “African stuff” was some kind of contagious, cancerous disease.

Sly remarks were made to me by my uncles, “Oh you into that African stuff…” as they gave me that smirk that you know uncles give you, when you have disappointed them and did something foolish. At the same time my aunts simply avoided me all together regarding the subject. No one it seems wanted to touch me with a 10ft pole because that “African stuff” will make one question his or her beliefs. If one is not careful they would think that all of this spirituality stuff is a curse based upon the way their family treats them.

That’s when it became apparent to me one day what is the purpose of knowing all of this metaphysical stuff if the one’s I love can’t benefit from it because they think I am crazy? That’s when it really hit me that I didn’t win anything.

(The Judges have unanimously ruled in favor of the Champ)

It took me a while to figure out what was going on and when I did, I had a powwow with my ancestors. I explained to my ancestors what it was that I was trying to do and that I was not trying to change things. I was simply trying to connect dots together so that the family and I can prosper spiritually. After I did this, it seems like a great burden was lifted off of my shoulder because, in the past I relied upon books and books are nothing more than what my padrino (godfather) use to call “guides” that are full of theories. True spirituality on the other hand is based upon actual experience and/or wisdom. No one can argue or debate another’s experiences because no one can take away what someone has experienced. Understanding this, now I have a new approach.

This new understanding has made me realize first and foremost, it is not my intention or purpose to change anyone’s beliefs. I can’t change the way a person believes or thinks because an individual believes and thinks a certain way based upon their experience. So, that’s the Spirit’s job to change the way an individual believes and think.

(The Champ has fallen…but they are getting back up).

Since books are guides and nothing but theories let me put my books down for a minute and use a similar source, the bible. Using the bible, this time and making comparisons, I explained how the Holy Ghost is what the Ancient Egyptians called Rau. Proof that the Ancient Egyptians had the Holy Ghost can be seen throughout their history that they lived relatively at peace with each other and with their neighbors. Not to mention that their society has prospered for hundreds of years, which according to the bible reveals that God’s Spirit will give one everlasting life.

(The Champ has fallen to the mat again and they are badly hurt. The refs are stopping the fight.  We go to the judges for a decision.)

After making this comparison, my kinfolk having no other choice said, “You know I don’t agree with everything you said, but it makes sense”. I was slowly allowed back into the family circle after that and not everyone rushed up to me and wanted to have a conversation with me, but I was respected.

Shortly after, I heard my kin was in the pulpit preaching and in the Spirit said, “The Egyptians had to know about God in order to build the civilization that they built”.

(The Challenger wins.)

I now look forward to have a conversation with with this next relative.

The Two Egyptian Eyes known as the Eyes of Rau aka Eyes of Hru (Hrw, Heru or Horus) symbolize the the sun, factual information, aggression, masculinity, physical, etc. (right eye) and the moon, abstract information, receptivity, femininity, spiritual, etc. (left eye). Together these eyes give a holistic perspective on reality.

The column in between these eyes called the djet is known as the backbone of Osar (Asar, Ausar, Osiris) symbolizing the ancestors giving one strength, foundation and support hence a strong back, to stand upright.
